But for making some kind of order or reasonable information, people will call it iPad 4, just as many of us just use the name iPad 3 for the present new iPad. (And BTW, I cannot really understand why Apple have dropped the "3" in the name, because it causes much unnecessary confusion, but this is countered by normal people giving it the name iPad 3.)

...which is all well and good, but it's kinda setting anything that comes out after it up for disappointment.
There should be no confusion. The latest MacBook Pros/Airs are not called by numbers, they are simply announced as the new MacBook Pros/Airs, and are called "mid 2012" MacBook Pros/Airs. Same with the iDevices. Those will be announced as the new iPad/iPhone and will be called by date and/or generation of product. In fact, apart from iPhone 4 and iPad 2 Apple has never appended generation numbers to iDevices.
"Today we are releasing a new product" We call it.... The New New iPad." huh when i typed that i said it in jobs voice lol

When one in the years after its launch need to identify which model one is talking about, one either has to say "2012 iPad" or "iPad 3" - isn't this all what this is about? (Because "new" is limited to the present time, until the next model comes along.)

Apple has referred to the current generation as "the new iPad" numerous times.

No that's the marketing term, so people don't get confused. It's just iPad. Look at the tech specs... You have iPad, iPad 2 and then iPad.

The device is not called "The New iPad". It's just been announced as "new iPad". When Apple announced new iMacs or new Macbook Pros/Airs, no one got confused in the past years, nor did they get confused with lack of numbers attached to them. There's no reason they should be confused now.
Same with all Apple devices and I bet the iPhone will make the change too. In a couple of years we will all be used to it and just like past iPod's or iMac's will be referred to them by generation and/or design.
