so you think the next hardware update will come sooner than later and fix most of the so-called "beta bugs"? i sure hope so.

The "silent, secretive" side of Apple will make some subtle but important hardware changes.

The software side will ad "features & fixes" and the second gen MacBook Pro Retina, will be one very well sorted out model. This is Apple's expertise.

Apple's very good about learning from the first go-round, once it's in the hands of users. They then have lots of data to learn from, and always release a great second year model.

Well said. This is what I usually do.

Not until Haswell next summer. Until then everyone will have to either wait, tolerate the animation lags, or pretend like there are no lags.

i really don't see how apple could pull off not releasing a new MBPr along with the 13" relase... these bugs, especially the lags, are absolutely crazy and a betaness unheard off in any prior release, by apple or any other major computer producer. that need to get fixed sooner than next summer.

I expect that in the end of the life cycle of the 1st Gen rMBP, its UI will become much smoother through further software optimisations by Apple. It should get better in time.

Apple released quite a few products that can be considered beta. One example on top of my head was the first generation Titanium Powerbook G4 with all its issues. It can be argued that it had a similar philosophy and hype as the retina MBP.

Yes, this is an excellent example. In fact problems aside, I liked the Ti so much that I watched & waited vigilantly until the very last rev was released then bought it in Nov of 2002. By then it was the first PowerBook G4 with SuperDrive, a 1GHz processor & available upgrade to a full 1GHz ram.

Well cared for as always, I found it to be a keeper over the long haul. In fact it still gets used from time to time, just for the fun of it while writing or surfing the web.

great historical example of waiting for the revision of the beta release greatly paid off... hope that current consumer generations learn from that.

You make it out like the system is unusable. So far the only lag I have experienced is:

1: Facebook. Can't blame apple for Zuckerburg's mess! The site is a POS and it lags all macs for some reason.

2: Expose on integrated graphics. I think this will be corrected in a future software patch, until then I will use only discrete while plugged in, and just deal with a minor inconvenience that does not affect usage in the least when on battery.

To be fair, the current rMBP is relatively head over heels better then the first gen Tibook in...everything. Sans the minor UI stutter, the rMBP is perfectly usable. I'm willing to bet that only a few who bought the rMBP will regret it because of the minor UI lag.

There is no lag with the MacBook Pro Retina. It's the best MacBook Pro Apple has ever made. I understand that some may be having issues, but I'm thrilled with my purchase and you couldn't pry this RMBP out of my cold, dead hands.

Want a video showing no lag whatsoever in the UI or web pages while running three videos at the same time, using Mission Control and switching spaces? LOL… check this out…

I apologize for the focus, for some reason my iPhone wasn't tracking the focus properly during the video. However, you can clearly see that there is no stutter or lag with five browser windows open, two of which were playing videos in one space while another space was simultaneously playing a full-screen 1080p video. Switching between spaces was buttery smooth with all videos playing simultaneously. No scrolling issues at all on Facebook (George Takei's very busy timeline) or theVerge.com - the two web sites most identified as exhibiting the "lag" issue.

The machine never broke a sweat during any of this, no fans, nothing. The performance of the RMBP is stunning.

If you don't believe me, here is another video made by someone else that shows similar results:

So where is the lag you guys are talking about? Can you please post videos so it can be properly diagnosed? You are proclaiming hardware problems when that is clearly not the case - if that were true, I would also experience this "lag" and the other issues you describe. Many of us, indeed most of us, are not experiencing any lag or choppiness whatsoever. It's possible that the integrated GPU shows some issues while the discreet GPU does not, and that could be the variable in play.

Video is proof positive that there are no issues, yet you guys continue discussing all of the non-existent problems, etc. It's clear you have an axe to grind, and it's your credibility that is at stake. Fortunately for those of us who have our Retina MacBook Pros, we are enjoying a smooth experience.

the lags are just one bug among many, unfortunately.

Here's a rumor: you're a fanboy troll.

Source?

Your post history and word on the street in the US.

a betaness unheard off in any prior release, by apple or any other major computer producer.

False. Chromebooks, Windows ME, Windows Vista, the first consumer SSDs, and the initial release of OSX. Just to name a few. Or so word is on the streets.

And since when do new major hardware releases not have growing pains? The first laptops? MP3 players? The Xbox 360? The PS2? Satellite TV? DVD players over 10 years ago? There is no news here, and chronic early adapters know what they're getting in to. I'm fairly certain the original 360 had more returns due to hardware failures than the MBPr. Get over the witch hunt. If you really want to "inform consumers" I don't think this is your audience. Most people on here know what they're getting in to with a first generation product. Try standing on your soapbox outside a Best Buy or Apple store instead. ;)
