i have the gap by the standby button, along with 1 scuff, and some grime/dirt stuff around the bezel, not sure if its out of box or my pocket, but my 4S didnt get this dirty this quick.. whats apples return policy 14 or 30? i might wait for a newer batch

edit; found out.

You have 14 calendar days to return an item from the date you received it. For an Apple iPhone, you have 30 calendar days.

ill wait 3 weeks and swap it out.

I just noticed what looks like a small light-coloured hair within the camera lens assembly and also have a half-inch scratch along the chamfered edge close to the charging port. Scratch is annoying enough, but debris in the camera lens assembly is just completely unacceptable. Serious QC issues at Foxconn. Going to ask for an exchange this evening. I bought the phone from a Canadian carrier, hopefully they exchange no questions asked.

Update: Apple store replaced my phone fairly easily. Very happy with the service.

Lined up three hours on launch day for my phone. First phone had blue dye all over the right side of the antenna band. Second phone had what appeared to be dried glue on the back between the glass and aluminum. Third phone had a small ding, but I decided to take it because I didn't want to look like a tool.

Fast forward a few days. Home button stopped functioning. Took it to the Apple Store. They replaced the phone, no questions asked. Replacement was in perfect cosmetic condition. Left the store happy. Went out to dinner a few hours later, and took a few photos. Photos all had this little white smudge thing in the same spot. Took a look at the lens and saw a little piece of dust inside the lens.

I think all the replacements I've gotten so far have been justified. It's getting horribly inconvenient! I just want a phone that works...

I must be the most unlucky person ever when it comes to iPhones.

Just unboxed mine to find this :( It also has some spots/marks lower down the side. It's not earthshattering, but when I pay $400 for a phone (or anything for that matter) I want it to be pristine. Let me put my own nicks in it! ;) Getting a replacement in motion with Apple.

Looks exactly like what I got on mine. Just came back from the Apple store with a new replacement.

When I went to the apple store last weekend to get my 1st glimpse of the iPhone 5, I picked up one of the white display models that they have secured to the table. The back was already full of visible scratches. This isn't even a phone that's been in someone's pocket yet and only 2 days old. It's a bit discouraging that Apple didn't come up with a more durable product since they're all about the quality, build and beauty of them. I still have yet to get mine ... Every apple store, AT&T, radio shack and best buy in my neighborhood seems to be out of them on a daily basis. But what crosses my mind as a sit here and read all of these "right out of the box" imperfections is what it's going to be like a year from now when the next iPhone comes out and people are trying to sell their old ones to Gazelle (like I've done for the last 2 years). You can't really choose the "flawless" option even though it technically could look as good as the day you got it ......

"Your iPhone is in this condition if all of the following are true:
Works perfectly
No noticeable flaws, still in its package or looks like new
Has zero scratches
Has no dust under the glass."

Looks like they'll end up with a lot of "good condition" phones and pay a lot less for them.

just got mine no scuffs/scratches what so ever (yet) , I'll ket the wrapping until i get the cases on monday lol

here is quick unboxing video i made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTGwuUJhB5U

Take no offense to this, thanks for showing... Now...

Why do all these unboxing videos look like they were done by gorillas or neanderthals?

I would like to see a nice professional unboxing, which requires two people, one behind the camera using a tripod, to zoom in and out, and look at the contents purposely and the other to open the box, with dexterity and show everything without man handling it.

I'm sure there are some professional youtubers who do that, I'm however just do that on my spare time, since I have a full-time job + studying in college.

I have always wanted to do one myself, but I am a bit shy. So you certainly win over me. I am just being a video critic.

Got my iPhone Friday. Small scratch on polished bezel, out of the box. See photo below. Small and I suspect more like that will come as it's barely a bare chrome-like surface. What do folks think, should I exchange it and risk other defects? And if I do, Apple Store or the carrier I got it from? Thanks!

Ok. I went to the Apple Store. They happily exchanged my phone. No ifs or buts, the rep said she'd be happy to and did. I did have to go through a couple units though. And while all bore imperfections, none were as bad as my original phone. Just wanted to find the best and they accommodated that. In the end, I know I'm picky and production challenges are to be expected in a first run. Once more Apple wowed me with their service, especially still being in the launch craziness.

Should I have my iPhone replaced for this or am I being too anal?

Is that a nick or does it feel like a bump? I had a few bumps on the back of mine that looked like that, but they came off with a little scrapping with my finger nail.

debating should i get mine replaced, I got this tiny nick out of the box. Plus i just put some scratches on the apple logo as well. =P

Replaced mine today with a white-box version from the Apple Store... Perfection :D

+1. I can't believe some of these people. I can see them now, the package arrives and they immediately put it under a microscope and start looking for flaws. People need to get a life. There are much more important things in life other than any little slight defects in your cell phone appearance.

I'm rather surprised myself. Glancing over the phone and seeing an obvious dent, scratch, etc is one thing.

Putting it under a microscope is another. Most diamonds can't even stand up to that level of scrutiny.

I didn't see anything wrong with my 64gb white.

Maybe I didn't stare long enough.

If it were me, I'd probably keep that one. The nick looks pretty minor compared to others. Mine came with a much larger nick which I was going to just live with until I notice a black speck in the glass of the screen. In your case, I'd be worried that they would send you one that is worse.

It's up to you though.

Went to the apple store today and immediately the genius saw the nicks and scratches around the chamfered edge and went to grab a white box pulled out the phone and allowed both me and him to inspect it all in all was a perfect phone couldn't be happier with apple's customer service :D

Why take a white box replacement it's less than 14 days get a new one out of the box!!!
