Man, my iPhone is still being delivered, but I am having second thoughts about keeping it. Even if it arrives in flawless condition, Apple cheaped out on the materials so much that it will eventually get those scuffs and dings much quicker than the iPhone 4 would.

Always cracks me up when I see people freak out about a hair :p

Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode with the cinnamon babka dinner party.

ELAINE: (looking in the box) Well what is this?

JERRY: What?

ELAINE: It's a hair.

JERRY: Oh, oh take it back. Let's get another one.

ELAINE: No, we're late as it is. I'll just take it off.

JERRY: No no come on really, get another one. It’ll take a second.

ELAINE: Alright, alright.

I received my iPhone 5 on Friday and notice a small "nick" in the chamfered edge along the left side on the front of the phone. I figured that, while I wasn't too happy since it was a brand new phone, I could live with it.

A day later is when I noticed a small black spot on the upper right area of the screen. It doesn't appear to be a dead pixel, but rather, something in the display or glass itself. In the photo, I have the phone displaying a solid white image so that I could take a good picture of it.

I contacted Apple last night and they said that they will replace the phone, but also asked that I email them pictures of the two trouble areas. Attached are the two photos that I emailed to Apple.

I'm currently waiting for the return shipping label to be emailed to me from Apple. I will update everyone as things progress.

Edit:
FWIW...
Production week: 37 (September)
Factory: F1 (China, Zhengzhou - Foxconn)

You can use your apple repair number and drop the phone off at a UPS Store. I did this and they got everything needed on the computer and then boxed it up and sent it next day air. No charge.

I had the Apple Store do a swap on my iPhone 32Gb in white today. Two dents both on the back antenna, one was quite sharp and nicked my palm. In and out in 30 minutes.

Are the replacement units from the bar or are Apple issuing sealed boxed phones in store?

My Genius first checked for a sealed AT&T box but were all sold out so got one at the bar which she said they are stashing for replacements.

Some people need to learn how to attach their images, or at least embed them at normal size! See the attachment for what I mean.

On topic, my friend posted a white iPhone 5 to me today, should arrive tomorrow. He opened it to inspect it for me and it's apparently totally flawless.

Ok cool. I just don't want a Genius Bar replacement, as I paid £700 for it I want a like for like replacement and not some "new" phone in a cardboard box (had bad experiences with them) As I'm well within my 14 days they should just exchange it for a retail one, if they have stock that is. After noticing my screen bleed and the 3 dead pixels I'm definitely going to be returning it. I'll give it a week and then head to the apple store. Might as well get some use out of the one I have and not worry about the phone too much.

At this point, there is NOTHING wrong with the phones in non-retail boxes.

So I just wanted to reply back to say that I took mine to the Apple Store today - I had several nicks/gouges in the metal band out-of-the-box - and Apple replaced it with a brand new phone on the spot for me. :)

Waited over an hour past my appointment today and left with my original factory-scratched phone. They were out of the "service units" and the less-than-friendly guy wouldn't make any exceptions and give me one of the retail-box non "service unit" phones that he waved at me initially, just because I bought mine from Verizon and not through Apple. Grrrrrrrrrr.

I don't want to wait "weeks" (his quote) for another service unit replacement to come in - I suspect there will be a higher probability of getting a refurbished phone when I'm trying to replace a brand new one that is only 3 days old. I let him order one but will likely either return my phone and order another one or try another store for a replacement...

Got my iPhone Friday. Small scratch on polished bezel, out of the box. See photo below. Small and I suspect more like that will come as it's barely a bare chrome-like surface. What do folks think, should I exchange it and risk other defects? And if I do, Apple Store or the carrier I got it from? Thanks!

are you serious? the replacement phones are brand new as well, especially this early.

I think we can all expect a flawless phone when it's new, but as the phone is made from aluminium, a soft metal, it's going to get marked very easily. I think we just need to accept this or wrap our phones in cotton wool. After the problems with signal loss and proximity sensors on the 4 and then the infamous "yellow" screen on the 4S, we should be grateful this is the least of our worries.

I already have a nick out of the back of my white one after just 5 days of ownership. Mine was flawless when it arrived.

Hair in iPhone 5 lens

I just noticed what looks like a small light-coloured hair within the camera lens assembly and also have a half-inch scratch along the chamfered edge close to the charging port. Scratch is annoying enough, but debris in the camera lens assembly is just completely unacceptable. Serious QC issues at Foxconn. Going to ask for an exchange this evening. I bought the phone from a Canadian carrier, hopefully they exchange no questions asked.

Mine is one of the unlucky one's that was probably handled by careless Foxconn workers.

Anyone notice these little nicks all over the backside? Is this something return worthy, or just the nature of the aluminum?

http://cl.ly/image/1A3n3h0G072I

That's similar to the nicks out of the back of mine, although I only have two. It's a soft metal, it's going to scratch any time it comes into contact with something harder than it. Even putting it inside a case won't really help, since grit can get trapped between the phone and the case, which will mark it. I can't say I'm happy about it, but unless Apple are going to replace any phone which gets scratched or dinged, there's nothing we can do about it, other than just use our phones and look after them as best we can.

I wanna see real world issues, not tiny insignificant particles. As far as I can see, the white iPhone 5 doesn't have the scratching issues that the black one has. So far unconfirmed though, as all I see about the issue are pictures like in this thread: waste of time.

I disagree Snapple shouldn't let 8 year olds in china assemble these things. For $650 -$1k these things should be perfect

If it was produced in the US, it would cost more than $1k.

My White/Silver iPhone 5 had marks near where the bottom piece of glass/plastic was glued to the aluminum. I figured it was just excess glue, so I took a paper towel, dampened it with odorless mineral spirits, and scrubbed at them. They are now gone. It seems that the glue Apple is using is soluble in OMS. OMS is also known as paint thinner. It dissolves anything oil-based.
