When will we see BTO pricing in the new iMacs?

I'm looking to get a new 27" iMac w/ the i7-3770, 3TB Fusion Drive, and 2GB GTX 680MX. I'm guessing the CPU upgrade will be around $300, the Fusion Drive around $300, and the GPU around $200, but it'd be really nice to know what the actual BTO prices will be. Anyone have any guesses as to when we'll see detailed pricing info?

BTO Pricing for 2012 27" iMac Models

Ditto - and I want to upgrade to 16gb of RAM as well. Very anxious to get a firm price for all the upgrades so I can get this approved by my accountant (aka wife). How long until Apple will publish all the BTO pricing?

Well, you can't get a 3TB Fusion drive with the Mac mini. You also can't get an i7-3770 nor can you get a GTX 680MX graphics card in the Mac mini. So while the upgrade prices might wind up being the same, there's no way to know based on the mini.

Lol same here. I have $1700 stashed in the bank ready to rock, the rest is up in the air. I have a feeling my wife won't approve anything much more than that! :eek:

I started saving $300 a month back in March, thinking it would help when they came out in June/July. Now I've got $3,000 ready to roll. Top of the line 27" here I come! :D

You can simply upgrade the RAM on the 27" yourself.

Don't buy it as an upgrade from Apple as they take liberties with their prices (as with everything else you buy from Apple - ha!).

Buy it from crucial.com instead as it will be much cheaper and just as good, if not better (Apple does not make their own RAM ... they simply buy it from other companies then charge you a premium).

Good luck with the accountant ;)

I only began this 2012 iMac plot back in July, I know I could save more and wait, but I have a feeling I'll be very impatient once we get an estimated shipping date.

Yes, with those, but in terms of the fusion drive and ram upgrade it seems that the mini price upgrades could be used as a guide.

How much slower would an external ssd be as opposed to an internal one? I'm worried the price of the ssd option for the 27"ers will cost as much as a cheap pc.

My guess is $250 for the CPU, $200 for the GPU, $200 for the Fusion drive, and $150 for the RAM, so $2800. Buy the memory separately and install it yourself...you'll save a bundle.

I don't think that a 512GB flash drive/SSD is available. I think the only options are a 1TB HDD, 1TB Fusion Drive, 3TB Fusion Drive, or 768GB flash drive/SSD. My preference would be to get a 512GB SSD and use an external 2TB Thunderbolt hard drive for data. Heck, even a 256GB SSD would be fine with me. I have a 256GB SSD and 2TB HDD in my 2011 iMac and my SSD has 218GB free while my HDD has 1.51TB free.

I think the Fusion drive is a good idea, but I'd prefer to manage my data and my apps myself and get the biggest speed benefit from the SSD that I can.

GPU upgrade will most certainly be more than $200...we're talking about the 680MX. Just look at current BTO options on Alienware's website for the GTX 680M (older card)...it costs $350. The 680MX is newer and rest assured, it will certainly cost at least $300, if not a little more. With your setup, you're probably looking at somewhere around $3500. 1TB Fusion Drive for Mac Mini is an additional $250...expect a 3TB to start at $400.

p.s. you underestimate the price mark-ups of Apple...they're out to make a profit!

If the top of the line Imac is 3500+ why not wait until next year and get a Mac Pro (when refreshed) ??

I want a new Mac - but the wife would never approve 3500 for a new computer - and the 21 is just not anything near what I would want with the slow HD and the ram that cannot be upgraded and the GPU which is not good.

You can upgrade the RAM on the 21.5" (up to 16GB which is plenty) and the GT 650M in the high-end 21.5" is actually a good GPU as it scores decent benchmarks in a majority of games available today. The standard HD is slow, however, the Fusion Drive is not.

The base price of the top-end iMac is $2000 so I'm not sure where you're getting $1500 worth of add-ons. Alienware sells the 680M for a $300 mark-up over the 675M, so let's assume the same goes here...that's $300. Let's also assume a $300 up-charge for the i7-3770 (which seems steep relative to what I paid for my 2011 i7-2600 upgrade, but regardless...), and let's tack on $400 for a 3TB Fusion drive (although I wish they'd offer a 512GB SSD option because I'd go for that and add my own 2TB external). That comes to $1000 which brings the total damage to $3000.

Who knows, maybe you're right. I paid $3000 for my maxed-out 2011 iMac (including tax and military discount, but not memory since I did that myself) so I figured a new iMac would come in at the same price point, maybe even a little less since the 768GB SSD is technically the "maxed out" 2012 configuration. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
