Why don't you call the Air Force base? MacMall is the only other BTO option I'm personally aware of, but there could be others and with the military, who knows, they might offer Customization. You could also use your military discount at the Apple store online and apply for 12 month free financing, if that's an option.

In the UK you can order BTO from any premium reseller.

I researched the prices of these components at Newegg, Dell, Nvidia, Apple to come up with a ball park number for a maxed out iMac 27" for December 2012.

Base Price: $2000 (Apple)
3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 (3.9GHz Turbo):$350 (Newegg)
32GB (4 x 8gb dimms) 1600MHz DDR3 memory: $300 (Newegg)
GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB GDDR5: $500 (speculation based on the GeForce GTX 680M at Nvidia)
768GB flash storage: $1500 (Dell, who charges $500 per 256GB of flash SSD)
Apple Care: $170 (Apple)

GRAND TOTAL: $4820

Apple will likely charge more on the components bringing it to just under $5000.

I'm prepared to eat my words come December, but I find it highly unlikely that Apple will charge greater than retail on BTO options (factoring in that you are upgrading an existing component, not introducing a new one).

I understand that Apple doesn't have the greatest track-record regarding RAM/SSD prices, but still, this seems like a worst-case scenario.

My prediction is that the total will be much closer to $4000.

Wouldn't the upgrade price for the gpu and CPU be a bit less than retail value? After all, the $2,000 already include the 675MX and the 3.2 i5, which you wouldn't get anymore.

God I hope so. It would be nice if they can keep the maxed out setting between $3000-$3500.

My guesses on the BTO 27" top model prices:

Intel i7 3770 - $200 (based on previous model)
RAM 16/32GB - $200/$400-500
GTX 680MX - $200-300
For 768GB - $900-1000
For Fusion Drives 1/3TB - $300 (I hope, since previous model charged $600 for 256GB SSD + 1TB) / $600 or more, although I'm not entirely sure if the larger capacity options will have more than 128GB SSD.

If my calculations are correct than we can expect paying a maximum of $3600-4000, depending on HD option. I, however, will only config the processor, GPU, and fusion drive with a price of up to $3100, or about $2990 with education discount (not including tax). Well, I can't wait to make the purchase!!

There is my problem with the price point of the 27" iMac, I already have a large 305T Samsung LCD I like, I can use my existing Samsung 256GB SSD, and power wise for $3400ish I can get a Mac Pro that will run circles around the iMac. Plus if I want to upgrade the video card later I can.

I love using OSX for my daily work and having fun on the internet but I also play PC games quite a bit so I will be running Win 7 under Bootcamp, I think waiting for the Mac Pro refresh might be the best bet for me. More upgrade options and more power for only $3-$400 more (based on current prices, who knows what they'll be after the refresh).

Maybe the Mac Pro is overkill for what I'd use it for, but I'd rather have too much power than too little. I like running games in the highest settings, mobile video cards don't tend to lend themselves to that.

Decisions.. :)

Well that is base price, we are looking for upgrades.

2000$ is including a 675MX and a i5.

so what is the difference price between a 675 and a 680?

and an i5 to an i7.

Even though I guess the 756 SSD will be very expensive.

Last year (or for the 2011 model), the cost difference from the base video card to the high end video card was $100 in the 27" iMac. I could see $150-$200, but not any more than that.

Yeah but that was essentially the same card with an added 1GB VRAM.

I think it'll be around $300.

Is it only me that thinks it looks silly having "Available November" on the site, in November, with no means of ordering? Personally I would have had the good old "Coming Soon(ish, well maybe...)"

If the 768GB SSD is $1000, Apple will be losing money. They know the price for the 768GB SSD will be astronomical which is why they are offering fusion drives. A 256GB SSD fused with a 3TB 7200rpm Hard drive should run about $700.

Note that the prices on NewEgg and other sites for SSD drives are for fully packaged drives that are drop in replacements for traditional drives. Apple's solution is different and should easily cost far less.

We do not know two things. The smallest stand alone SSD the iMac can be equipped with, I expect 256g. How much that will be in premium over the base 1TB drive; I expect $250 as the 128SSD of the Fusion + TB is 250 in the Mini.

, and power wise for $3400ish I can get a Mac Pro that will run circles around the iMac.

Not necessarily true at all depending on how you configure the imac. At least not true until and if they update the MP next year. The only thing the MP now has clearly over the new imac performance wise is multiple cores over 4. The rest can be on par or greater in the imac. (other than drive convenience and cost that is)

OK it's November.... What the hell, Tim?

If it was to be this early in Nov, they would have had pre-ordering already.

Has anyone heard any rumors of release dates for the 21.5"?? This will be my first iMac. When does Apple typically release their iMacs? I thought they usually were always available the same day of announcement (obviously incorrect on my part).
