Alright, Ill come out with the truth... heres what I BELIEVE happened.

I believe a previous drop (Ive only dropped it once ever) may have weakened the glass, and the pressure from my jeans completely shattered the glass. Thats what probly happened.

Initially this proven liar said this:

No drop, no damage. Dont believe me if you dont want, but its true.

Liars should be banned. Thread reported to mods.

Well, at the risk of being called a liar, my iPhone 5 also cracked by itself. I have SwitchEasy TONES case and the phone has never been dropped. I did notice a small tiny mark on the lower half corner of the screen last night. I thought it was a dirt, so I did rub it few times before giving up.

The damage is not as bad as the original poster. Made an appointment at the Apple Store this afternoon.

The body can become distorted from production and this puts undue stress on the glass and cause it to crack. Again, poor aluminum choice.

to be honest this is a little hard to believe. I've owned all iterations of the iphone and ive yet to experience a self-cracking screen. Maybe you bumped into something? Regardless even if it was a defective unit and the glass had a weak point its going to be hard to prove that the genius at the apple store. hopefully things work out for you and you can get a replacement

I have been a long time iPhone user (original iPhone, 3GS, 4, 4S) and it is the first time the screen has ever cracked. I did sit on it few times, but only against soft seats, which I am sure most of us do regularly. I suppose it has been dropped from a sofa to soft carpeted floor few times (although not within the last week or so) but my iPhone 5 is in a case and that is also something that shouldn't cause screen to crack.

In any case, I will be stopping by the store in few minutes.

Yup. And I just came back from the appointment with a new iPhone 5. According to Apple Genius, a hairline crack such as mine is covered under warranty. Otherwise, you would normally need to pay $229.00 (plus applicable tax).

Why are you using a $650/750/850 retail phone if you/the person paying for your phone bill can't afford the ~$200 replacement? I'm sorry, but if you use one of these you'll pay a good portion of $200 a MONTH to use it, so why is replacing it at the store not an option?

because he wouldn't be "cool" without it

Exact same thing happened to my iPhone 5 though the crack on my device was around 15 mm long in the top left corner. No impact damage whatsoever.

Took it to the Apple Store Regent Street, London, and left with a new iPhone.

Genius said that Apple were aware of a fault in the glass specification for the first release of iPhone 5.

I'm working a hunch here.

Try putting the broken phone back into your pocket and retrace your steps that fateful day.

Then examine your phone to see if the screen has mysteriously and inexplicably healed itself.
