Seriously, there are so many dopes on here complaining about headphones. THEY DIDNT BUY BEATS FOR 3.2B FOR THEIR CRUMMY HEADPHONES.

They bought them for the streaming radio service that will be part of iOS 8. They will use the backend, then dress it up pretty and launch an all new iTunes Radio App.
Beats music is trash & so is iTunes Radio.

Their headphones are horrible from every respected audiophile/magazine out there. Another of those products that thinks sticking a rap or a hip hop singers name to a product would make it sell.

"Apple could bring the Beats hardware brand under the guidance of Jony Ive and use it to create new music product lines"

Note to self : Never ever buy an Apple headphone!

After the acquisition they'll probably rename the company

Just to be clearly, and as every analyst is pointing out (except for Munster who is an idiot IMHO), this is not about headphones. It's about media distribution and expanding sales onto other ecosystems.

I'm not suggesting it's a good idea, I'm just amazed how uninformed most of the commenters here on MR are.

Well, this morning on CNBC one of their reporters said her sources told her it was all about the headphones. I guess all that negative Samsung marketing did have an affect on Apple.

Because Apple's free cash flow is around $1.5B per week. They will almost certainly not borrow the acquisition costs, but even if they did, it makes little difference.

You also cannot say that Apple will never repatriate their overseas retained earnings. Leaving cash idle essentially forever because using it would incur taxes is poor business practice.

I don't follow you.

They been doing it for years and don't seem them changing the policy now. Just look at how they funded all the stock buy back they did in the last two years. 100 percent funded by borrowing.

 They've only been doing it for the stock buyback, because the stock buyback was for more than they had in US cash.

Are you forgetting Apple earbuds became iconic and have been for 13 years now? How was beats first?

I didn't forget about the iconic earbuds. But they were marketing iPod/iTunes brand and lifestyle. They weren't in the business of selling headphones.

Whatever reason Apple has, I think this devalues their brand. I will not pay one single dollar in direction of anything Beats. In fact I would demand money just for wearing Beats.

interesting move especially that Beats was big on Android, especially HTC and some other phones including the HP laptop lines.

I think Apple has some good plans for this move, but it will be interesting to see what happens. I personally like Apple's iTunes Radio, over Milk from Google, but I think as nice as some of the headphones and other music products are for Beats, they are just way too expensive for most.

The reason why those companies went with the Beats branding is just that, for branding. Apple blows everyone else's audio quality out of the water.

The negative stereotypes about Apple are that their products are overpriced. That you're paying more for inferior technology. That you're paying for the shiny Apple logo, for the slick design, marketing, packaging, etc. I'm not saying I agree but that stereotype is out there. Buying Beats does nothing but amplify that perception. Go to any tech site and you'll see comments about how this fits in perfectly with Apple's business model (selling overpriced hardware). I'm trying to understand why Apple sees a future in selling crappy headphones for huge markup. If Apple really wanted to improve the quality of the audio in their products buying Beats isn't the way to do it.

But maybe this isn't about the headphones or Beats brand, maybe this is Apple signaling that Eddy Cue has too much on his plate or isn't capable of taking iTunes where it needs to go.

The people who believe that about Apple aren't going to have their minds changed no matter what Apple does, and I'd personally give very little weight to the opinions of gear heads commenting on tech chat boards. These opinions are biased towards the negative, and I would say they are made by non-mainstream buyers of products. I have no opinion about the quality of the Beats products, but it does seem they are profitable, so I would evaluate the finances of an Apple acquisition on that basis.

I also get the impression that Iovine is a big part of the package. The iTunes business was built up to what it is because Steve was so good at romancing the music labels. Iovine might slip comfortably into that role at Apple.

You call others dopes and then go ahead and say something equally dopey. You really think a mediocre streaming service with a couple hundred thousand users is worth billions?

apple isn't dumb, people are stupid.

You do realize Apple is made up of people, right? Not some higher intelligence. People. Smart people perhaps, but as prone to making mistakes as anyone.

My guess is they own a good amount of patents.
Or simply someone at apple loves beats

While I am certain Apple will be more than happy to continue selling Beats headphones, there's no way this happen if not for Beats Music.

No, they just started using debt, and only to finance the most recent buybacks. Probably not even close to 100%, either. In any case they can borrow against their massive free cash flow at ridiculously low costs, so how they finance this acquisition hardly matters. I'd be more concerned if it involved stock.

Rumors has it that Apple is going after Monster cable and Bose next.....

Well now that you mention it and giving it some thought, Monster and Apple do sucker us in the same way! They're like kin. Dear God I'm so sick of this shti.

Well not in my App Store here in Germany.
Their website shows the popup fur the iOS app just a second and then just disappears and their link to the iOS app just leads to an empty app store page. Maybe something wrong in the App Store then?

The service isn't available in Germany. That's likely it.

I love the outrage being expressed by us 40-60 year old white guys who don't understand why Apple would do anything that didn't appeal to us personally. I promise you that Apple will never force any of us to buy a pair of Beats headphones; however they've been for sale at Apple Stores for years now just in case you want to.

I can't believe ppl are implying that apple brass woke up a couple days ago and were like hey let's buy beats for the hell of it.
