Does anybody have a breakdown of costs between subsidizing an iPhone 6 or 6+ or buy it upfront and get an AT&T plan without the phone on it?

See my posting above. You'll save $150 over over 2 years, if you either buy the phone upfront, or use AT&T Next to "finance" the phone.

But, it depends on your data plan offering the reduction in the device fee from $40/device/month to $15/device/month.

Besides OIS and longer battery life they have the same feature set

I was talking about the carrier differences (RF bands), and I actually meant in the context of their pre-order system. The unlocked phone on "T-Mobile" is actually "T-Mobile and AT&T", but the Apple site doesn't show that.

I wish Apple were more clear about the hardware differences between their models. (Sidebar: I wish Apple only sold one universal-band model, unlocked--and any subsidy is between you and your carrier. But I digress.)

Is the "T-Mobile" unlocked model exactly identical to the AT&T model hardware, except for the anticompetitive carrier locking? If so, why brand it as "T-Mobile"?

Like others, I want to order an unlocked phone on launch day and use an AT&T SIM...

I ordered the T-Mobile contract-free iPhone 5s and it was exactly the same. Inserted my AT&T sim and activated through iTunes and received the "Congratulations your phone is unlocked" message". Hope this helps!

Does anyone have experience with preordering? When do you actually receive the phone?

I walked into att 5min before open time for the 5 and walked out 10min later with a shiney new phone. I'm thinking about doing that again.

Normally the day before release date.

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I haven't found a definitive answer: If we preorder online Friday at midnight, will we get the iPhone 6 / 6 Plus on our doorstep on the 19th, or will it leave the factory in China on the 19th?

When you place the order it tells you the expected ship date.
If you get your order in before the first batch is sold out (in the first 3-hours usually) then your phone should be delivered on launch day.
If you're not in the first batch then you get it when you get it.
Only the first batch will arrive on launch day.

My AT&T contract for my iPhone 5 doesn't end until mid-November, so I'm going to wait until after my contract ends to get the iPhone 6 Plus. However, I want to buy it outright (non-contract) because that would end up being cheaper over 2 years than having a 2 year contract for me. Now my only decision is if I want the 64 GB or the 128 GB, but I have some time to decide

I pre-ordered the 5s but didn't make the initial cut, so I ended up canceling it and getting one at a store a week later. Maybe try pre-ordering and see if you get in line successfully for the first shipment, if not, cancel and head to a store. A few times last year, apple allowed online ordering/pickups at stores. It was only like 1 or 2 days they did I it initially though.

So, do they charge your card when it ships? I've always bought my iPhones in store.. I'd rather not deal with the crowds this go around. So, I just wonder if I don't get the first batch... Then, I'll cancel my order.

Just wonder how the process goes in regards to charging the card.

It's not only the charge you need to worry about -- it's the upgrade eligibility (if that effects you).
If you place the order online and then cancel it might take hours (or days) before the system shows you as upgrade eligible again.

If I'm already an ATT NEXT customer can I preorder through Apple and get the same contract pricing? I can't tell by the chart (attached).

Okay let's clear some stuff up for everyone who is curious about how the ATT Next system works.

A. IF YOU HAVE A CURRENT 2 YR CONTRACT ON THE LINE YOU WANT TO UPGRADE:

-- If you started the contract ON OR BEFORE JANUARY 18, 2014: You are eligible to upgrade to ATT Next on this line right now. This also applies if your contract is over. This will 1. End the remainder of your 2 year contract for this line, if any exists 2. Have NO ETFs for this line 3. Give you complete ownership of the device on this line that is now OUT of contract. Sell as you please and profit. :)

-- If you started the contract AFTER JANUARY 18, 2014:You cannot upgrade to ATT Next until 20 months have passed on your 2 year contract. That is 1 Year, 8 months for anyone counting. So, if you signed up on January 19, 2014, you're looking at September 20, 2015. How unfortunate. This is the only real nitpick I have with ATT upgrade eligibility to the Next plan, as this is a long time to wait.

Overview of ATT Next:

-- You can either have the ATT 12 Month Plan or the ATT 18 Month Plan

The way it works for current and future ATT Next lines is this:
The 12 month plan is comprised of 20 payments, and the 18 month plan is comprised of 24 payments This is the cost of the phone (without tax) divided into 20 or 24 even parts over 20 or 24 months, depending on which plan (12 or 18) you have on this line. The 12 or 18 months refers to earliest upgrade period, so after 12 or 18 months, you can upgrade to a new phone without any money down (besides taxes on the new phone).

B. IF YOU HAVE A CURRENT AT&T NEXT PLAN ON THE LINE YOU WANT TO UPGRADE AND HAVE MADE THE ONLY THE MINIMUM PAYMENTS (12 or 18 months' worth)

At this point where you reach 12 or 18 months, you are required to trade in your phone to complete your eligibility for a new ATT Next upgrade. Everyone is whining about how the phone "isn't really yours". This is because you haven't paid it off yet! Remember how the 12 month plan has 20 months of payments and the 18 month plan has 24 months of payments? Well, after 12 months of payments on the former plan, you still have 8 payments left to make, so ATT is saying, "look, we will waive the last 8 payments if you trade the phone in". Say the payment is $32.50 (I will list general pricing per month below). You have paid 12 months * $32.50 = $390 and still owe 8 months * $32.50 = $260. Total cost is *gasp* $649! That sounds familiar! Yes, that is the retail price of a $199 iPhone, ladies and gentlemen. No ripoff here. If you wait until after you make your 20 payments (if you have the 12 month plan) or 24 payments (if you have the 18 month plan, you then own the phone. At this point, if you choose a new ATT Next phone for this line, you do not have to trade in your old device. Understood? Good. Moving on.

Now, let's say -
C. IF YOU HAVE A CURRENT AT&T NEXT PLAN ON THE LINE YOU WANT TO UPGRADE AND HAVE NOT YET MADE THE MINIMUM PAYMENTS (Less than the 12 or 18 months' worth, depending on your plan)
You can log on to your ATT account via their website and use the options available to make some choices:
PAY TO UPGRADE THIS DEVICE option. You will pay the remainder of your minimum monthly payments up to and including the 12th/18th month, which will immediately deem you "upgrade eligible". So, if you paid 10 months out of your 12, you will owe $32.50 * 2 months = $65.00. After that, you trade in your phone and proceed with a new upgrade as normal.

PAY OFF THIS DEVICE option. Self explanatory. This is the remaining amount of money you owe on the phone (so it would be all payments through the 20th/24th month rather than 12th/18th month). If you made 10 payments on a 12 month Next plan and want to keep your current phone but also upgrade, then you will owe 20 months - 10 months = 10 months * $32.50 = $325.00. You will then OWN the phone and can proceed with a new ATT Next upgrade without trading it in.

D. IF YOU HAVE A CURRENT AT&T NEXT PLAN ON THE LINE YOU WANT TO UPGRADE AND HAVE MADE THE MINIMUM PAYMENTS BUT HAVE NOT PAID OFF THE PHONE (More than 12/18 but less than 20/24 months, depending on your plan)
You can either 1. Surrender your phone and upgrade. You made an extra few payments of $32.50 that you won't get back. Oh well.

2. Make the remaining payments via the website with the PAY OFF THIS DEVICE option: If you made 18 payments on a 12 month Next plan and want to keep your current phone but also upgrade, then you will owe 20 months - 18 months = 2 months * $32.50 = $65.00. You will then OWN the phone and can proceed with a new ATT Next upgrade without trading it in.

The $32.50 I keep referencing, again, is for a '$199' phone, i.e. the entry level iPhone 6 with a retail cost of $649.00. Remember 649/32.50 = 19.999 aka 20.

So, here we go with pricing:

ATT Next 12 Month Plan (12 months of payments to trade in, 20 months of payments to own):
16 GB iPhone 6: $32.50/mo
64 GB iPhone 6: $37.50/mo
128 GB iPhone 6: $42.50/mo
16 GB iPhone 6 Plus: $37.50/mo
64 GB iPhone 6 Plus: $42.50/mo
128 GB iPhone 6 Plus: $47.50/mo

The ATT 18 numbers aren't quite as exact a science as the 12, but these are pulled from ATT and are valid:

ATT Next 18 month Plan (18 months of payments to trade in, 24 months of payments to own):
16 GB iPhone 6: $27.09/mo
64 GB iPhone 6: $31.25/mo
128 GB iPhone 6: $35.42/mo
16 GB iPhone 6 Plus: $31.25/mo
64 GB iPhone 6 Plus: $35.42/mo
128 GB iPhone 6 Plus: $39.59/mo

Now, all of this is just for the cost of the phone alone. It does not include service costs, which are separate and are beyond the scope of this discussion. You can save some serious coin with ATT Next and Mobile Share though, (on the tune of $15/month per line for 6-9.99 gb and $25/month per line for 10gb and greater).

Cheers!

I did this check on 4 phone lines still under 2 yr. commitment. So not eligible for subsidy from AT&T.

My pricing was lower then what the initial post had. Can anyone tell me why that is?

That is what mine showed - I purchased the 5S on release day (waited in line) and it says the my pricing NOW would be $649 (6+, 64), and on October 2015 would be $399 with 2 year commitment - I won't be doing NEXT ever - but I do tend to upgrade every year. I can pass my 5S down to my wife...

But with my 6+... what will I do with my mini retina... not much bigger than the 6+ - OH THE HORROR!

you are still less than a year since you activated 5S

They put an authorization hold on the card at the time of order, but don't officially charge it until it ships. If you cancel the order, you should be able to call your credit card company and have them remove the hold.

Sorry man but with Next you have to return the old iPhone if you are going from a 2-year contract to the Next program.

That's what AT&T is telling me.

THERE WE GO.

You have to be getting a 10Gb plan or larger to get some discount.

Taking a while to get through the smoke and mirrors.

no you don't
you only return it if you have a NEXT phone and you upgrade to another NEXT phone before you pay it off. going from 2 year contract you keep the phone

THERE WE GO.

You have to be getting a 10Gb plan or larger to get some discount.

Taking a while to get through the smoke and mirrors.

No, you don't.
The 10GB plan gets you a larger discount but all shared data plans are discounted when using Next.

AT&T Next savings: Compares Mobile Share Value plan pricing for a smartphone line on a no-annual-service-contract (AT&T Next, bring your own, pay full price, or month-to-month) to one on a 2-year agreement. The discount or savings will be $25 per smartphone line on plans 10GB and higher, and $15 for plans less than 10GB. Customers with smartphones on 2-year agreements prior to February 2, 2014, on a 10GB or higher plan, or prior to March 9, 2014, for 2GB to 6GB plans, are also eligible for this savings. If upgrading to a smartphone on a 2-year wireless contract, you are no longer eligible for the discount. To receive this monthly discount, upgrade with AT&T Next, bring your own smartphone, or pay full price for your new smartphone.
http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/plans/mobileshare.html

The AT&T Next program just spreads the full price out over the 20 months. $849 is the price of the phone. You're not paying extra to do it that way.

With their new plans, you get a monthly discount on the service as long as you participate in the Next program. If you choose to upgrade on a 2yr contract at the reduced/subsidized price, your monthly plan goes back up.

In my case, I have 4 phones sharing 10Gb, saving $100/mo ($25 per line). If I upgrade and pay the lower price for a 2yr contract, I lose that $100/mo discount. However, I can do dang near THREE new iPhone 6'es on the Next program and still save a little money. If I do 2yr contract upgrades, and pay $250 less for the phones, I lose money after month 3. :-(

Danged if ya do. Danged if ya don't!

This is the part people seem to not figured out yet. I agree. If you want to pay out of pocket for the discount and max bill every month, you can, doesn't seem like the way to go to me. My bill went down like $60. So we can both get iPhones for almost exactly what we were already paying. Long term I think it's better.

I'm eligible for upgrade in Nov 2015
I'm looking forward to iPhone 7
Right now I have a Note 3.
