The new Note 4 vs old iPhone 5S speed test!

I think window animation .5x
Transition animation off
Animator duration .5x
Is best :)

Keeps the nice hangouts send text and chrome menu animations that I enjoy. Seems to quicken multitasking / launching animations.

Maybe I'm crazy?

And people better be using ART in these damn speed tests

ah never mind note 3 doesn't have art, dunno about note 4, probably not until L

Current S3 user. I played with a Galaxy S5 earlier this year and noticed significant lag with Touchwiz. The HTC One M8 felt a lot faster in normal use. I'm a highly skeptical that if the S5 lags that the Note 4 doesn't but I haven't used it. Really, once you give me parity on screen size with the Iphone I have a hard time choosing Android. Ya, I'm one of those Android defectors planning to pre-order a 6+ tonight.

Smartass comment hehehe. It's not about adding seconds to your life, it's about a phone being fast when you need it to. ;)

For an example, far too many times have I missed capturing a moment with the Note camera because of lag, when I could have done so with an iPhone. Just one example. :)

my wife's iphone 5s camera doesnt lag. it just crashes. i hear her complaining all the time.

my nexus 5 is just as smooth as her 5s and the n5 runs much higher resolution.

More mis-information. I suppose you're going to force me to make a movie to prove you wrong. Swipe to unluck my phone or when needed, type in my passcode and it flashes directly to the home screen....ZERO lag or delay.

Same with Photos and movies and I have hundreds of pics on my phone. Launch the app and photos tile on the display immediately.

Galaxy Note 3, Nova Launcher pro & animations OFF. ZERO lag.

Not misinformation at all. I have a Galaxy S3 and even on cyanogenmod it will lag brutally when I hit the power button sometimes. And also, the only reason yours doesn't lag is because animations are off, touchwiz doesn't need to do it's zoom animation when you click the power button. Why should I have to turn animations off and make it ugly just to get it unlock properly?

----------

There are so hideous that the iPhone 6 Plus includes thumbnails. :p

Hideous on the iPhone 6+, hideous on the Note 4. Thanks god the iPhone 6 doesn't include them. Only reason they included them is because otherwise people would complain it's just a scaled up version. And thankfully they don't put them next to every message you send like samsung. LOL.

Here's some lag if you all don't believe me when I say these android still lag...

^^ Why should you have to turn off animations? You don't, but you if you don't like the animations and the time it takes for them, that you call lag, then you are making the decision that speed is more important. Enter developer mode and you can change the animation characteristic, but in the end, and IMO, they are worthless. It doesn't change the user experience much if at all other than it greatly speeds up the phone. It changes the personality of the phone.

I'm a car guy and it's a lot like many of the cars I own. My Daily Driver sport sedan, In luxury mode, is soft, shifts like an old lady in an Oldsmobile and very much what I would call lazy....or luxurious. I much prefer a firm ride, flat cornering and harder shifts and for the car to hold gear thus I drive it in sport mode all the time, except winter, I use snow mode.

Something is weird there, I've never seen lag that long with any app. I've got my wife's iPhone 5 and my Note 3. Which app are you testing with? I'll put them both side by side and upload a video and see what kind of lag I get with either.

Something is suspicious with that video though IMO.

I experimented with turning off animations when I fooled around with my phones but I hated how it just jumped between apps, made it look unpolished IMO. And don't get wrong having a device that flys between things is nice but it's unpleasing to me.

I'm also a car guy too, I'm guessing you drive a 2013 Audi S4 with the dual clutch? I have a 2008 BMW 335i 6mt and love the thing to death especially with a tune. ;)

It really depends, my friend has the S5 and sometimes the gallery takes a long time to open and sometimes it's almost instant. It inconsistent so I'm thinking it has something to do with the cache, whether all the photos are cached or not.

That's possible, it just seemed like a very long lag. If that lag were the case I'd have thrown my Note -3 out the window a long time ago. The last time I remember seeing lag like that was on my Samsung Captivate. The only lag I've ever seen and complained about is in the dialer app, the first time you open it and the switch to the different tabs there is like a half a second lag, but only the first time and then never again unless you force close it and reopen or reboot the phone. I've seen this on every android phone including the new nexus.

I can't really tell which app it is. I can do a side by side with an ip5 and a Note 3, I can reboot them so they are both fresh. I'd be curious as well.

You guessed right. Ran 12.30's @112mph with a simple flash and a 3krpm launch control limit....for now. Now she has an APR pulley and a custom tune which has woken her up quite a bit. She's into the 11's now but I did auto x this year not the 1320. I only know because I've pulled on twin that runs very low 12's and it wasn't pretty for him. Not bad for a 4000lb 3.0l 30mpg v6. :D

Awesome man, thats fast! I've got the JB4 tune on mine and it hauls pretty good. My 6 speed slows me down off the line because I can't brake boost but I'll sacrifice that for the connected feeling of driving a manual :D

Actually I do know about the developer settings turning off animations. I also deactivate the crap bloatware and processes running in the background.. Though I wouldn't root as that's too risky. You lose your warranty and it may brick the phone or make certain features useless.

Rooting in itself does nothing to impact features.

Deactivating bloat is no different from not using an app (so long as the app is not enabled, think S-voice here). All it does is hide it from the app drawer.

Turning off animations can introduce stutters. You want to minimize long drawn out animations so scalling back is preferred.

With all of this being said, I agree with many that this shouldn't even be something one needs to do to get a good UX. Hopefully L with ART addresses these altogether with transitions and animations at a full 60fps. new compiler and garbage collector.

The Galaxy Note 4 is by far the most superior device when compared to the iPhone 5S. The 5S uses a dual core 1.3Ghz processor with 1GB RAM. The Note 4 uses a quad-core 2.7Ghz processor with 3GB RAM. The video shown shows no lag or delays between either device. All iPhones from the iPhone 5 to the iPhone 6 Plus are powerful devices on the inside. The same is said for Samsung's Note series.

More cores or more Ghz doesn't necessarily mean better performance. That's why you see iPhone 5s with dual core processor outperform Galaxy s5 with a Quad core one.

I don't think anyone is disputing that the s3 is known to lag. And maybe the s4 to a lesser degree, although barely noticeable. However, the note 3 in my experience doesn't lag. I press the power button and the lock screen comes on instantaneously. Swipe to unlock and goes straight to home screen.
I will accept that if you have a slow sd card, pictures will load slowly in the gallery, but if you use internal memory or a fast (genuine) card they don't.

Depends on what your definition of 'outperform' is..

None of us have used the Note 4 but as an S3 user I can detect lag in the Note 3, S4 and S5 when demoing them in the store. Turning off animations doesn't fix it either, it's Touchwiz. Demo the S5 and M8 back-to-back and the difference is pretty stark. It's one of the reasons I would only buy a Google Play Edition Samsung phone at this point.

Touchwiz/Cheesewiz, just replace the launcher and turn off the animations and whatever lag you are noticing in-store is gone forever. Nova Launcher is far superior to touchwiz.

I don't know how valid it's to compare a 2 year old phone like the S3. Granted a lot of consumers probably still use it, but it's ancient technology.

As for that video I keep seeing it pop up, I call BS on it. I've never ever seen things take that long on Android, even on a notoriously crappy laggy phone like the Captivate which I used to own. My tired old eyes can't figure out what app is being opened, but I've offered before to upload a video on a Note 3 next to an iPhone 5 fresh after reboots opening whatever app you guys want. You are not going to see that BS lag on that video.

I agree.

All I know is that my $350 Nexus is as fast as a $719 iPhone 5s. And my Nexus 5 has 285% more pixels to run.

And a worse screen. And worse camera. And worse battery life on tasks when the screen is on. And worse support. And few useful and innovative features. And worse ecosystem.

Both are priced accordingly.

I had a horrible experience with Nova Launcher on top of TouchWiz. It felt very buggy, creaky and clashed a lot with various TouchWiz functionality.

TouchWiz is not perfect, but it has some nifty gimmicks. I prefer HTC's take on Android for now.

How do we know if the guy loaded the apps and exited them on the iPhone before the video was made and the apps were already in memory?

App's should open faster on Android with Art enabled. Art was probably not enabled on that phone as it's not enabled by default until Android L.

As I said before I'm not bothered if another device opens an app a millisecond before mine. My S5 is plenty fast and doesn't lag. I just purchased a galaxy tab pro 10.1.granted I'm still setting things up but it is just as fast and smooth as my ipad air.

Hardly news for me .... No matter how loud fandroids will cry, android isn't smooth like iOS, especially with a resource hog like TouchWiz on it.
I'm waiting for android L to see if something gonna change.
Not a big dal for me, I'm quite satisfied of my nexus

Same with my note 12.2

Flawless device.
