would the lack of iPad mini updates be out of fear of iphone 6 plus cannibalisation?

no, it wouldn't. they updated the mini at the same time as the air last year. also, if you knew apple, you'd know they don't let fear of cannibalization stop them. if you replace it w/ another apple device they don't care.

The ipad fad seems over,

hahah, yeah, a fad...the fad that dropped PC sales and earns billions a quarter. total fad, totally over. expect PCs to climb again next quarter, right?

My iPads don't have a mute button. They do have a wonderful lock rotation switch. Mute can be achieved by holding volume down for a second or so. Removing the lock rotation switch would be bad.

They should just put it in the Control Center and then really do away with it.

I never use the switch anymore so I don't mind that. I bet it won't even be thinner than the iPhone 6 and they're still going to claim no switch because of its thinness.

I'd wish Apple would start the "trend" to remove rear facing camera's on tablets. Perhaps its acceptable on the iPad Mini, but with iPad Air and any larger iPad Apple has planned, Apple just needs to say now.

Seriously a tablet is the worst form of camera short of those big wooden boxes with the black hood you have to put over your head and the large fire bomb used as a flash.

Instead this is what accessories are for, like Sony's hand-held wireless camera lenses. At least then you can sit the tablet on your lap and hold a much smaller and less obtrusive lens to record video or take pictures.

There is nothing worse then someone missing out on real life because they have to record everything with a tablet screen inches in front of their face, but it is worse when you are the person that is forced to sit or stand behind someone that is blocking your view with THEIR tablet. It will be even worse when all those douchey people start using a large iPad Pro as their primary video camera.

Please excuse those of us that use the rear facing camera for photographing documents and turning them into PDFs, or use it as a document copier, or...just because you don't use it...

Why would Apple have to remove the mute switch to achieve a thinner profile? I would think the headphone jack takes up more space than the mute switch and there are no rumors of that going away.

untrue, forbes had a theory about some new-fangled 'lightning headphone jack hybrid' a while back. there's a rumor for anything and everything.

While I am not ready to recommend closing the Patent Office, I think we might be approaching a more mature (i.e. flat) part of the product lifecycle for touch devices (phones and tablets).

For example, the iPhone 6 brought us a larger screen and NFC. I guess it takes better photos than the 5s too. Well, a larger screen isn't really a major innovation. In fact, many people prefer the smaller handsets. NFC might be useful at some point. But, I still need to carry around a wallet with ID cards.

Anyway, I think there is going to be less reason for folks to do yearly updates, which is maybe a good thing.

Ok well no credible rumors, which includes this one.

I AM A LOYAL APPLE CUSTOMER WHO THINKS WE SHOULD BOYCOTT BUYING ANY NEW IPADS.
at least not buy until they actually do something big with it. and i don't mean just a new size!!! i know they feel they don't hae to even try to compete with samsung or surface but i wish they would at least give us some of the stuff these two companies bring to their tablets!!! some ideas of things apple needs to do....
UNTIL THEY DO I HOPE SOME OTHER LIKE MINDED PEOPLE WILL ALSO NOT UPGRADE UNTIL THEY DO. I HAVE AND IPAD 3 WITH A CRACK ON THE SCREEN AND I'M STILL NOT GONNA UPGRADE!!

Time to CHILL!!!

No one is forcing you to upgrade your iPad. Boycotts are not necessary. Simply buy what you want when you think it provides value to your life.

Like, I don't buy a new car until my repairs cost more than the payments on a new one, or the added cost is justified by the new features and benefits. If a different manufacturer makes something you like more, make a switch and buy that.

It's not going to bend, is it?!?!!

It will. But only if you put it in your back pocket and sit on it.

Why. There is a lock rotation switch in the iPad's Control Center.

Then explain the Mac Mini and the lack of a headless iMac.

As for the 6+ vs. Mini iPad, I don't see much overlap between them. There is a larger difference in display size between the 6+ and the mini than between the mini and the air.

higher resolution screens. like 4K TV's competitors screens are now higher than apple.
outputs and inputs... an HDMI compatible or second lightning, usb or flash memory slot or both!!
more internal flash. 256 maybe even 512
how about running full osx with full osx apps!!
a pen and screen that competes with wacom for pressure sensitivity and tilt.
more than just a home button. you hav a huge border, why not some app specific user definable shortcut buttons?
100% mutlitasking, not the 2 app thing you are about to give us!!!

you don't need to give all of this (though it'd be nice) but give us some! even if it's just of a more exepnsive pro model!!!

i bought your new iphone even though it's already behind the galaxy note and other models that were released before the 6/6+ so can you please give us a pro model ipad!! not a big one an actual pro one!!

Oh, geez. I feel kinda bad for you. I had that iPad 3, the bastard child of the iPad family, and I didn't realize how bad it was til I upgraded. It is pretty apparent why they upgraded the 3 to 4 in half a year. The retina screen was just too much for the graphics processor to handle smoothly. Dare I say the iPad 2 was a smoother experience?

It basically reads like you've posted this article purely to discredit "The Michael Report" (whatever that is). Seems petty and surprised Macrumors has stooped to name calling.

Lol, when MacRumors posts wild speculative rumors with little to no corroboration, they catch flak (rightly so, imo).
But then- when they actually call someone out for lacking journalistic integrity & purporting random guesses as fact (great job, MacRumors!!!), You're mad at them for that??!!
Huh?? *confused*

I agree with you.

force me to hold onto another thing i could lose when i bought the ipad for shooting rough drafts or location scouting scenes with an expensive mobile rig of about 6 other accessories? no thanks. and if they got rid of that camera they'd probably make it thinner and more fragile. no thanks again.

You bring up an interesting idea: what if Apple added features to the iPad cams that made for better document scans? Different glass, optimized flash for short-range, higher MPs for more detail? Software to optimize scans and OCR.

Then create an iTunes-like app for managing scanned documents. Tag sorting, smart folders, the whole deal.

Combined with fingerprint security and Apple pay, it could be the perfect paperless system for home users.

As it is now, I couldn't imagine doing heavy document scanning with an iPad. Without an accessible file system all the docs would be associated with one app and sharing them en masse would be a headache. No way would I want to sync all my personal documents over the internet to Apple's "cloud," I need a solution that stays in my WLAN and leaves me in control of the data.

How will i do my podcast??

The mute/vibration switch is completely gone in the new redesign, with sources from within Apple telling us that it was a necessary move to achieve the thinner profile of the new tablets.

That makes no sense. How did they get a similar switch into the iPhone 6? Is the new iPad going to be thinner than the iPhone?

Pretty simple assumption that the next iPad will play catch up with the new iPhone.

Circle edge, touch, gold likely, new processor.

3-handed

Well, the iPhone moved from one-hand to two-hand operation so it's only natural that they upsize the iPad to require three-hand operation.

One of the worst, if not the worst article ever by this website

If it was a parody, which is isn't, I would applaud macrumors

If any of this is accurate, it seems the reason for a lack of "true" multitasking was a need for more RAM. This will upset many iPad Air owners, I'd be surprised if this is omitted from the current iPad model in iOS 8.

The iPad air can't handle two webpages open at once, you think it's going to have split screen multi tasking?
