Looks like an excellent update. By the looks of things they've reduced the system requirements, which may mean it will be less of a resource hog.

The MacBook is now officially supported, along with older PowerPC models too.

Kudos to Apple for making it a free update, although there'd have justifiably been an outcry if it wasn't.

Edit: RAW support updates also point to OS X 10.4.8 being released this week too (as per previous poster's observation).

the 'what's new' page says "Work with RAW images from more than 50 camera models, including the Fuji S2, Fuji S3 Pro, and Sony A100." but i don't know which ones exactly .. i know the Fujis are new because i have the S9000/9500 which is still not supported and it didn't support any Fujis before

Did you read the previous posts? The complete list of supported cameras was posted on the previous page...

It says "MacBook" updates at this event. I hope that wasn't a typo! :D
It is not a typo, but look at the full statement:
There have been rumors of Aperture updates and possibly MacBook updates at this event.
You have neglected two key words, "rumors" and "possibly." Those two words in combination like that shouldn't get your hopes up that much for a MacBook update. :(

Omg with no laptop updates, I'd like to watch as Apple's laptop sales tumble. Already the Apple Store dropped their MacBook shipping days down to 3-5 days (nobody wants it).

Or they're making more

Can't wait to see Aperture running on a Macbook. Though I'll definitely go into the Regent St Apple Store to see it running before buying it just incase Apple is being a bit optimistic when it says it 'runs' on a Macbook. It barely run on the Mac Pro I was playing around with at the Store today.

Anyone know when the stores update their software? Is it done straight away?

Lots of small updates we were asking for!

Well, without looking at 1.5 itself I'm pretty pleased. Seems many of the things the serious users were asking for (esp on Apple's Aperture Discussion forum) are there.

I REALLY hope / expect that Apple improved the keyword DB code - since they now have the offline option, this all had to be rewritten. I'm expecting this to be the MAJOR improvement in Ap 1.5 in terms of usability and speed, and might be the reason that they dropped the supported specs to includer all Mac Intel boxes.

On a related note, I'm VERY happy to see improved keywording and searching, esp the "no" keyword search option. Though a minor thing (compared to offline support), this always drives me nuts in the current version:

Add, maintain, and update keywords more easily using improved keyword management options — even lock the Keyword HUD to prevent inadvertent changes...

Quickly find all images with “any” keyword assigned or with “no” keyword assigned when searching by IPTC info using the Query HUD...

Search for images by file status — i.e., “offline,” “online,” or “referenced” — using a new Query option...

Correct spelling, revise wording, or completely delete metadata/keyword entries using the new Autofill Editor.

Finally, iPod integration an interesting new feature that we won't fully appreciate for a while - I wonder why the iTunes store video downloads were upgraded in size recently but no current iPod can take advantage of this new format. I still speculate that we'll see a new larger format Video iPod that can do double duty for us photographers. I'd love to see the ability to Stack and apply exisiting keywording to RAW images int the field via an Ipod:

Sync to iPod: Take your photos with you by using iTunes to sync your entire Aperture library — or just selected albums or Smart Albums — to iPod.

All 5G iPods with upgraded firmware to 1.2 can play the iTS movies just fine.

Export API, XMP, EXIF, RAW formats .ARW, .CR2, .CRW, .NEF, .RAF, .SRW, .TIF, .OLY, .DNG, ... Can I just take the damn picture!!!
Quoting Ryan O'Neal in What's up doc: I am having a nightmare!!!

Why are there so many Negative votes? An update to Aperture is a very good thing for photographers. If all these voters are people who were hoping for a MacBook Pro update, that doesn't quality you voting an Aperture update thread as negative. Big deal... the notebooks didn't get updated. Move along.

I really wish Apple offered a trial of Aperture on their Web site. I would love to try it out sometime.

I've had enough of this voting system. Look for a thread on it in the Community Discussion.

Edit: Make that the Site and Forum Feedback forum...

The fact the shipping time has dropped couldn't be they've had more stock delivered could it?

?????????
I can display a 10,000 x 8.000 pixel picture on an iPod if I throw away 99% of the data as well. But why would you want to use such a huge file for no reason? Not only would it take up vast amounts of space, but you have to process all that "throwing away" info on the fly.

The new videos take longer for you to download, use more storage space on the iPod, require the iPod to downsample at playback, and cost Apple more bandwidth.

So why would Apple do all this if they weren't in fact planing to USE the new format on an iPod? Soem may say "it's for rregular Macs", but this size is too SMALL for to build a new standard for computers. So the only conclusion I can reach is that it has to be for a new iPod to come...

What?!

Having visited my local Apple Store several times over the last two weeks (my PowerBook G4 was in for warranty repairs), I can safely say that I saw more MacBooks selling than any other computer... easily two MacBooks for every iMac that sold.

This is no surprise when you consider the price/performance ratio and the overall market shift toward mobile computing (not to mention back-to-school season).

If anything, I'd say it's a safe bet that Apple may be having trouble keeping up with demand.
