The yellow screen issue is just a forum fueled over exaggeration!

No such thing as a perfect LCD especially a TN panel used in a laptop. The top of the screen will never match the bottom in colour or luminosity unless you run some software to control this like in high end colour proof monitors.

Move the screen back on forward and the colour will shift. I imagine every single MacBook Pro will display the same phenomenon to some degree.

I have seen and returned a machine with a magenta cast over half the screen that obviously had issues but the yellow tint thing is just viewing angles.

As for being a content publisher and using a laptop for colour critical work????

I agree this is partially true....we're feeding into each other, but I do think there is the odd bad screen, like I had, where is was clearly something was not right (ie. the right side).

I am hoping my replacement will be good, but after reading these forums, I'm always constantly scrutinizing everything I get looking for imperfections, perhaps even if there aren't any :(

I just received my 15" HR Glossy i7 replacement as well.

As I suspected, the yellow tint at the bottom is present on this unit as well.

Unfortunately, this one has 'nicks' on the aluminum around the bottom edges where the bottom cover screws in.

Well, if it makes you feel any better I scratched mine while tightening a bottom screw to swap the hard drive for a Hitachi 7K500. Those screws are a bitch to remove and tighten.

Don't entirely agree; some have very blatant yellow splurges. This isn't always some smooth gradual thing that only obsessives see.

You are correct! However, the vast majority of the cases are just over obsessive users who spend too much time reading forums looking for problems they would never usually see. :(

Actually, this MBP replacement has even worse yellow tint than my first one. I'm trying very hard to ignore it but it's not easy, since you're reminded of it constantly.

Another thing I don't like about the new MBP, besides the fact that this screen is worse than my 2007 ASUS Lamborghini  , is the softer keys on the 2010 MBP, definitely a step back from my 2008 MacBook. :(

Update: I think the screen has started to grow on me. I believe that the first software update also did something to the color balance to help reduce the overall yellowish cast, because I noticed it less after that. :)

Anyway, when you have two Pages documents open side by side, you realize what a great leap forward Apple finally made, after all these years, joining the 1680x1050 brigade. :D

Love this lappy!

I made a post on Apples support forums about the yellow tinge on my 15 inch HR screen and Apple called me within two hours wanting me to send my old machine in because their engineers were "highly" interested in taking it apart to see what was causing it. They sent me another CTO model before I sent my old one in so I won't be without a computer and when the new one came in the yellow tint was a bit less but still there if you are desperately looking for it. I've kinda learned to live with it and not over think it since it isn't really noticeable if I hadn't been reading these forums :p.

One thing though is anyone else having problems when looking at songs lists in iTunes and the alternating blue/white color bars being barely distinguishable? The blue is so light I have to focus to tell them apart.

Now Apple has two yellow machines to look at! :D Like I said earlier, I have gotten used to it, so don't really notice it anymore. All I see when I consult my 13-inch 2008 MacBook is that it's a hella small screen. :p

Anyway, the blue bars are light on my MBP but not that feint. But I agree that they are much lighter than the ones in the Finder when you look at files as a list.

I think the yellow tinge problem is real and it should not be present in a professional laptop. I have seen a Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro at Future Shop without the yellow tint behind a i5 MBP with the same problem that i have.

For me it's a subtile difference in color but is there, and working in photoshop with black and white images and scrolling over the picture can tell the differences between the screen areas.

Here another image (You can compare the hue values between the top and bottom gray squares)

Really don't like to waste time in replacing, fixing, dating at the apple store.

Yes, it's a PITA. I'm wondering if Apple has figured out a fix for this problem yet. Would love to exchange my screen but I know it would be more hassle than worth the effort.

Question: Were there any specific methods you used to display the problem to the Genius representative? My first try today was a fail with my 2009 15" MBP.

I remember when the iMacs were having their problem, someone created a test image to easily identify the problem. Is there any such thing for the MBPs?

Thanks so much for the help.

No not really, but he was a friendly genius, so that's what you need to begin with. :)

Where did you get this image from? I'd like to test mine.

Thanks

Here's the image. I think the white spaces between the gray blocks help to show the difference in hue.

Any successful experiences of getting a good screen after exchange on MBPs 2010?

I gave up the exchange game after 6 replacements.. at least the one I got now isn't that bad and doesn't have any dead or stuck pixels. I'll live.

Have you finally got a good screen without yellow tinge?

It's the best screen out of the 7 MacBook Pros I went through (especially because half of them had dead pixels and stuck pixels as well), but it still has a slight yellow tinge.. I think it might just be 'normal' for the current MacBook Pros.. they all seem to have a slight yellow tinge towards the bottom.. a shame really, because my 8 year old iMac G4 with TN panel doesn't have that problem :(
