New MBP Kernel Panics!!!

hey folks
Good news and bad news; I just bought a new MBP. The bad news is it is a fan of kernal panics, i've probably already had about 5-8. After the first one, I reinstalled the OS from the disks included in the box (I wanted to drop the extra printer drivers anyways). This didn't help. It's the higher end (stock config) MBP with Santa Rosa. I really don't want to have to take it back. Do you need any info to help diagnose this? I'll try to save a report log next time it happens. Any ideas on things I could try/test to see what the problem may be?

from the looks of that log (not that i know what i'm talking about), it seems to be something with the airport.

I reseated the RAM; I pulled both and then switched their slots. we'll see how that goes. Any ideas coming from the panic log?

it's been an hour of constant use since I reseated the RAM and no kernel panics yet. That's a good sign, but please keep any ideas coming. I'll take all the help I can get. Thanks guys and gals!

Hmmmmmmm. Interesting. You might be right. However, I'm on a college wifi network so I can't change security settings. But, for the past hour, I've had full connectivity to the wireless and haven't had one kernel panic yet. I'm going to try disconnecting/reconnecting to the wireless to see if I can induce one.

Of note: I've had kps without even being in OS X. I tried running DiskWarrior off a CD (ie I booted from the CD) and kernel panicked two separate times. I would assume that the airport had nothing to do with it that time. I had one of my more CS inclined friends to read the panic logs. He was saying that there are page faults, which could point to problems with RAM. So hopefully my reseating of the RAM fixed things. We'll see...

yup. SMART was fine (checked with Onyx) and I checked the disk in disk utility. Going on 2.5 hours without another kernel panic. Bed time now, we'll see how things go tomorrow. Thanks for your continued support.

Matt, try reseating your RAM. I think that worked for me, I haven't had a kernel panic since I've done it (10:30 last night EST). I'll use the MBP all day with the wireless on and we'll see how it goes...

I just kernel panicked again. I was on the wireless and checking my email in Mail.app. Back to the apple store you go!

I have an appointment around 5pm EST at the genius bar this evening. I'll post my results. Hopefully, if they know what is going wrong, the information will help you guys out a bit. If not, maybe they'll exchange it for another one. Wish me luck!

hey all,

I went to the Apple store and they exchanged my machine for a new one. So far, so good, it seems to be working perfectly. No more dropping out of wireless connections either. The genius was leaning towards a problem with the airport card itself (ie it was loose). He said loose cards were a problem in the 12" powerbooks and this sounded like that. Anyways, I had the dubious distinction of being the first "capture" for their fixit system nationwide. I guess when something weird/important happens (ie kernel panics in just released hardware) they enter all the info into a database of some sort, and it was totally empty before my computer info was entered. Lol, mine was the first big official screwup. yay for me.

As I said,so far, so good. No problems whatsoever, hopefully this continues. Good luck to all of you.
