hey all,

I went to the Apple store and they exchanged my machine for a new one. So far, so good, it seems to be working perfectly. No more dropping out of wireless connections either. The genius was leaning towards a problem with the airport card itself (ie it was loose). He said loose cards were a problem in the 12" powerbooks and this sounded like that. Anyways, I had the dubious distinction of being the first "capture" for their fixit system nationwide. I guess when something weird/important happens (ie kernel panics in just released hardware) they enter all the info into a database of some sort, and it was totally empty before my computer info was entered. Lol, mine was the first big official screwup. yay for me.

As I said,so far, so good. No problems whatsoever, hopefully this continues. Good luck to all of you.

:) haha.

Still going strong without kernel panics so life is good. I wish there were a way to track your old hardware to find out what turns out to be wrong with it. oh well, yay for awesome apple customer service. :apple:

I'm glad you were able to get a new machine. I think I need to do the same. I've been going strong all night, but then just ran into another panic. What did you tell the people at the Genius Bar? I hope my store can be as accomodating.

I just told them what happened; I had bought the computer from them the day before and I had over 10 kernel panics in less than 12 hours of usage. The genius was actually taken aback that the new machine had that much trouble, it was kind of amusing. It would be helpful for them if you also saved the panic log detailing the problem. You would also want to tell him/her what you did to try to fix the problem (ie I reinstalled the OS with erase/install, reseatted the RAM, nothing helped). That's all I did, they took care of it from there. Make sure you bring your box/accessories it came with and the receipt. And a good, positive attitude. You don't want to annoy a genius, they can use their immense brain power to levitate you off the floor and out of the store, minus a new MBP. :D

I'm having the same problem with my new 2.4 MBP.

Wireless is cutting in and out. So far I've had 2 panics, but I've not used it much yet.

When I first bought a C2D MBP (2.16 previous version) I had very similar panic issues. THEN I got the battery issues (going to sleep early, not showing full charge capacity). This was early in the product's cycle, so they actually gave me the option of returning the whole MBP (not just the battery) as the engineering department wanted to "capture" it. On the second MBP, which I've had since early February, I've only had one kernel panic, and that was three months ago. I think the most recent airport updates fixed that.
Funnily enough, I got the battery problem AGAIN the day before the battery update download was released. This time, they just sent me a new battery. All is well (so far)!
Anyway, my guess is that there's a software problem more than a hardware problem. I bet new airport updates would fix this again. Seems like this whole draft N thing is causing a lot of headaches. I NEVER had a problem with my ibook G4. Not even one kernel panic.

doh, it's happening again. not nearly as frequently, but twice is bad enough. i'm on the phone with tier 2 support at apple, we'll see how this goes. Lol, I started writing this about 25 minutes ago. I just got off the phone with the tier 2 support guy (wonderful service!) and he is sending the info to the engineers and I'll be hearing back from him tomorrow or more likely monday about what's going on. So worry not fellow kernel panickers, the engineers are on the case. I'll let you know if they find a solution

Well, it took forever, but I exchanged my SR MBP for a new one this morning. Everyone at the store was very helpful. The guy took 1 look at the panic logs then just said he'd exchange it for a new one. I got home, set everything up again, and ran into another panic. I decided to just ditch wifi security all together. I turned it off on my router, deleted my router's name from the Airport access point list, then re-added it. I haven't run into any panics so far. I'm pretty sure this is a software issue, since the odds of getting 2 bum MBPs in a row is huge. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck to everyone.

I purchased one yesterday and had a panic too, for the first time. It's funny because I wasn't even using it: I had Camino and Mail open while it was on my desk and I was on my Mac Pro. I looked over and saw it.

The panic log didn't mention Airport, however, and since then I haven't had any panics.

Still, I do feel a little distraught that a new machine that cost $2000 already had a kernel panic.

The support guy that I was working with said that the engineers want this computer back also to look at it. Lol, so this will be my third macbook pro in about a week! I'll be shipping it to CA and then they will ship me a new one off the production line. Third time is the charm, right? If this one is also screwed up, I won't be all that happy about getting a fourth

Could the Apple Genius reproduce the kernel panic when you brought it in to him on either machine?

He didn't try. He asked me if I would be able to reproduce it and I said no; there was no one way that it always happened. It would just happen when I least expected it. :(

Ok sorry I don't believe those odds. There must be something wacked with your wireless network or something.

Negative. It's not a personal wireless network, but a campus-wide network that thousands use. But believe what you will. I think that, since this has happened with multiple laptops in a row, it's more likely a software issue with the new SR chipset. But, then again, I'm a mechanical engineer and don't know much about the inner workings of the computer.

EDIT: Here's a link to people with the same problem: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=986785&tstart=15

thanks for the link, I passed it on to the support guy that I was working with.

Do you think this is a good reason for me to go buy the airport router rather than try and make the wireless work with my existing non apple equipment? This is of course if the issues are because of the wireless in some way, which it sounds to me like it might be the case. Anyone know of people having these kinds of issues when running the airport router?

Well, you could always buy the MBP and try it with your existing router. If it doesn't work, then you could try the apple router. Might as well try it with what you own now in case it works just fine. That will save you some cash :)

I bit the bullet today and went up to our apple store and bought the airport n router just in case. I will be trying my new MBP when it gets here wednesday on the airport. I will post back if I get the issues testing it on my old one first. Can you tell me how long it was prior to getting the error? I would like to know a rough time frame of using it that the error would be present.

The shortest time was probably 10 minutes. The longest time til a kernel panic was on the order of 5 hours or so. I think if you can make it a full 24 hours without a problem, you might be home free :) Good luck!

Thanks, Since I have a new airport n router ready to go, I really just wanted to see if your issues were in fact wireless related. I thought if mine did the same on my old netgear than I could post the info to you. I will giveit a shot the first day to see what happens.

Im kinda new to the Mac World I just got a NEW MBP 15' 2.4 can someone kindly tell me wat kernel panics are thanks.

I am new to apple as well but I suppose it would be similar to a stop error or BSOD (Blue screen of death) in windows. kernel panic is also used under Linux, so I am assuming OSX uses it the same.

I am currently using an old Belkin wireless router and haven't had any problems... but I did get an airport express yesterday with the mac since I want wireless printing and faster speeds... stupid Belkin can't handle over-the-air printing.

I'm planning on shelving it for use as a backup router.
