Does anyone have any idea whether or not O2uk will be offering a 1st gen trade in/discount on the 3g phone? I saw a thread saying that orange france will be doing it.

    I doubt it.

The best existing owners can probably hope for is that the new model will be dealt with like the 16Gb iPhone for existing contract holders upgrading - no extension to the contract.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but no-one made you buy the phone in December, and no-one is forcing you to upgrade to a new one when it comes out. You bought the phone on an 18 month contract and O2 would be quite within their rights to disallow any upgrading at all. I doubt they'd do that, but it wouldn't surprise me if what O2 do offer is an upgrade with an extension of the contract for another 18 months.
