I put a extra 4GB in my 09 27" imac making it 8GB about a month ago, and it made a big difference. Just ordered another 8GB from Crucial. Will i notice the same difference again or have i blown my $100.

Your iMac has four RAM slots and came with two 2 GB modules, adding another 4 GB via one or two modules will leave you with either one or no empty slots.
Adding another 8 GB via two modules will get you either to 12 GB or 14 GB of RAM.

If you can benefit from more RAM depends on your unstated computational habits and can also be found out via opening Activity Monitor after a day of typical usage and going to the System Memory* tab and look for Page Outs and Swap used and report back.

Yes, you can use three 4 GB modules. You can use whatever compatible models you like.

Btw, where did you have to spend 100 $ (XCD, KYD, SGD, TTD?) to get 8 GB RAM in two 4 GB modules? Normally those cost around 40 USD nowadays.

And what about the System Memory tab, have you looked there yet?

Yes you can. Just make sure though that they are of the same latency/frequency.

Sorry i bought 3 x 4Gb from crucial at $28 each and i am in Australia so delivery was $25, $105 AUD which is still cheaper than here with postage. the 4GB one i have was $60 from a reseller alone.
Will give it a go and see, beats over $2k on a new one.
    Cheers

    ----------

The 4gb i have in it is DDR3-1067MHZ, the 3 i ordered from Crucial are DDR3-1066. According to them that is the ones for late 09 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo 27".

Got the 3 x 4gb from crucial and now have 16GB, and wow what a difference, so much faster. Also put the 2 x 2GB left over into our 09 21" iMac so it now has 8GB, and it is flying too, hadn't even thought of that till it came. So doubled the ram in two mac's for $100. Should be right for a couple of more years now.
    Just need a rMBP now.
