Hello,
My mac did a thing where it lost everything on the desktop and became unresponsive. It rebooted fine, but then after I shut it down, I can only get it to come up in safe mode. I've tried repairing permissions and disk, resetting nvram and smr, and removing startup Items. I tried to boot from my external back up (using ccc), but it still just freezes at the apple logo after the gear disappears like it does in the above scenarios. If i try to recover from the recovery partition, it tells me the drive is not eligible, and to contact apple care, probably because I'm failing smart status. I'm running lion. I have a new 7200 RPM 1tb 2.5in hdd, but I have no idea how to make an installer drive, since I can only boot in safe mode which strips the usb capabilities. Any ideas?
