Why risk it? My 60 gb works fine with 1.2.1.

Heh, that's what I've been telling myself for ages with plain old 1.2. I've been putting off the upgrade to 1.2.1 for so long that I think iTunes even gave up on reminding me about it. I didn't even know there was a 1.2.2, let alone 1.2.3.

The only "bugs" I can think of encountering are the very rare glitch where it stops playing a song partway through and jumps to the next one. Going back to play the partial song again usually plays it all the way through just fine. I always figured it seemed like more of a hardware (disk read?) glitch than a software bug, so never bothered to try the upgrade(s). What other bugs could there be?

One feature I've wanted for ages is to make the To Do List feature actually useful by allowing you to check things off as "done" by clicking the center button when they are highlighted. Should be very simple and easily doable within all "old/Classic" generation iPod interfaces. Would be great for shopping lists and stuff. But since the iPod Touch is clearly the future in terms of interface, I'm sure Apple has no interest in a useful feature for the older stuff. Actually I hear the Touch doesn't even have a decent To Do List feature either, so maybe Apple just isn't interested in useful features, period.

Just thought I should point out another fix in this firmware update: Text scrolling is now a lot smoother than it used to be, albeit it's still not as smooth as my old 4g iPod used to be. But the 4G iPod had other bugs that never were fixed, for instance after turning it off and putting the hold switch on, it may sometimes switch itself on. Or, another bug, is when I turned it on sometimes it would start playing the first song on my ipod in alphabetical order... so I don't see why people complain about the classic iPod especially now it's a very fine piece of equipment...

Problems with 1.2.1 and OS 10.5

Were there really that many bugs in 1.2.2? Or 1.2.1, for that matter?

I did experience a serious problem if an 5G iPod was connected to my iMac (10.5) during an OS reboot. For now I am waiting to see how 1.2.3 performs before upgrading but I am guessing they are trying to fix that bug.

After upgrading my iPod to 1.2.1 i had to reformat, it synced ok at first but now I get the same error message as you. I'll install the new update tonight & see if it helps. It's reassuring that others are having issues, I thought my iPod may of been on the way out.

Dam... it still wont sync I strill get "Error (-48)"

Why do people always hesitate on software updates? It's just for the iPod, not a big "risk".

I have iTunes 7.4.2 and am not going to upgrade until I need to, because I made the mistake of doing so last time and it screwed up my entire installation. Apple made some change between 7.4.2 and 7.4.3 that made iTunes freeze as soon as I started it, and I'm worried that that change is still in 7.5.

So unfortunately, because the software doesn't seem to be completely unit tested for my configuration, I'm gonna have to deal with the slight loss of functionality and security in exchange for the guarantee of stability. I might upgrade once sufficient time has passed that I can assume things have changed enough that there's no longer an issue.

I'm guessing that's the motivation for the iPod users here, too, though I'm gonna risk it myself.

One thing I can say this does is "break" games that people have put on (and haven't purchased them) and returns an error

Just updated and now can not eject ipod after syncing, after adding videos. I get a warning saying the ipod is in use by another application. iTunes doesn't quit either.

I have to force quit iTunes.

shouldn't have updated.

The 1.0.3 update for 3G nano still have not solve the on-go-playlist bug. My on-the-go playlist is still inactive. All it did is offer some new stuff to the video output feature and the options to choose between widescreen or fill-screen when viewing video on ipod.

Anyone download it yet?

Well thisis the first message Im posting with my brand new Touch. I love it so far. But the organizer function (iCal) is useless since the alarm notification for some reason won't work. It can be programmed in and it will make a visual notification but the sound won't go off. The latest update didn't seem to fix it. (My Touch claims it's already updated.)

The iPod Classic 1.03 update works very well, though a lot more work needs to be done to get it to the functionality of the 5th generation iPod software.

The responsiveness has improved considerably, such as transitions from screen to screen, changing tracks, and scrolling.

Playlists are now sorted in the correct order as they occur in iTunes, instead of randomly as before.

I'm so glad that music videos are once again grouped by artist, then listed in alphanumeric order.

The one remaining glaring problem is that TV videos are NOT listed by season/episode or alphanumeric order as in iTunes, but seem to appear randomly.

Also, in settings you can't place the backlight control in the main menu. You can't select the clicker in off/speaker/headphone/both speaker & headphone modes, it only allows off or speaker & headphone.

Still this was a great improvement and a positive sign that Apple will get the Classic up to snuff. I just get the feeling that Apple must have been in a rush to get the Classics out, because they weren't able to make the Classic system work like the 5th gen iPods right away.

this sucks!!

updated to 1.2.3
after that itunes was unable to read the contents of my ipod so i had to reset.
than i refilled it and directly afterwards it was broken again.
after the second refill it worked, but for some reason it now skips after 12 or so seconds through the tracks of a recently uploaded album and plays various throungh it, the titles are shown correctly, but the sounds are not. and the sounds are deffenetly OK. now i reloaded the songs on the pod and it seems to work.
on older tunes it seems to work correctly.. hopefully this was just a one-time error.

before all that crap the system worked just perfect.

I have a 3rd generation nano with 1.0.3, and I can can chose from: Off, Speaker, Headphones and Both.

I'm still waiting for Cover Flow to be sorted by Album Artist rater than just Artist.

1G iPod mounting

FWIW, I have a 1G (5GB) and a 5G (30GB) iPod Video. For previous iPod firmware versions for the 5G, the 1G would not mount on my desktop if the 5G was already connected even when the 1G was visible in iTunes (7.5). The 'do not disconnect' symbol was always on the 1G's screen even after ejecting it from iTunes. Now with the 1.2.3 update on the 5G, the 1G and the 5G mount in iTunes and on the desktop and both can be unmounted normally. Your milage may differ.

My only problem that I have with my iPod that wasn't fixed with this update is that when I plug it into my computer when it's been off for a day or more, it always freezes on the "Do not Disconnect" screen, and it doesn't show up in my computer. I have to manually restart the iPod and then re-connect it and it works. Anyone else have this problem with theirs?

Hi,

The update we are talking about is not for the iPod Touch, it is for 5th Generation iPods.

Aside from that, I have just installed the update myself and so far have not encountered any problems, but I have not done anything with the iPod as of yet, I just have it on charge.
