1/2 a band: What are people doing?

Apple's idea to give sports band owners 3 pieces is a great convenience to its customers. Not sure of your size? No problem! Try the M/L one and if that doesn't fit, just go to the box and swap it out for the S/M piece. But once you find the right fit, most of us will stick with it - leaving an awful lot of "extra" pieces sitting in boxes, unused. This seems strange, but I can't figure out what to do with the extra piece. Yes, I've seen a few on eBay, but, really, who's going to buy a random, incomplete band (except maybe for a quick replacement). The band-swapping sites never really got going, once the "3 piece" design was confirmed. So ... What to do with all the "spares"? There has to be a good idea. Thoughts?

When you turn around and sell it for version 2 in 18 months, what if the person buying it needs a band of a different size?

Well, I think that's what most everyone is doing ... I don't know .... Just seems a tremendous waste to me

    ----------

Fair point ... But even those who do upgrade to v2 ... Many will either not sell v1 or will have lost the "spare"

I wouldn't say it's a complete waste. The band size is adjustable so if something does happen to your strap, the extra strap may still work as a backup as long as you happen to have a wrist size that works in between the two band sizes. Both bands seem to fit 150-180mm wrists for the 38mm and 160-185mm for the 42mm.

The extra sized band is a bit wasteful.

I think it would be good to swap the unused band with another Apple Watch owner. If you only use the S/M band, then swap the Larger band for someone who uses the Larger sized. That way both of you get an extra half band in your correct size (in the event one gets damaged).

Whilst you are probably not going to need the spare half band in your size, at least it is going to be more useful than a spare band in the incorrect size.

Anyone in Australia want to swap a 42mm Large Black Sport Band for a S/M Black Sport Band?

I've been using the large band ever since I got it out of the box, but noticed I was plugging it into the second or third to last hole towards the watch, and had a lot of slack that I had to tuck in, which made the band thicker on my wrist.

Out of sheer curiosity, I went back and opened the box, tried on the small band, and I'm on the second to last hole towards the end of the band, and just a tiny piece of slack left to tuck in.

I think I prefer it better this way, it even sits nicer on my Griffin WatchStand, and it's good to know that I could switch to either one if it starts to wear down or go bad.

Someone just needs to produce some fairly high-quality half-bands with just the pin section, then everyone could buy one and swap them.

Or, just keep it in a drawer somewhere like me :p

Can't you use a drill and add holes and trim off end if needed since its hidden anyway.

I'd just keep it in the closet, in the box.

    1) When you go to resell, be good to have it.
    2) If there's a problem with your band discolouring, it will be a valuable reference to demonstrate to the folks at the Apple store. :)

That's interesting. I think the band-swapping sites are still operating, for those who like this mix and match approach. I like the idea of swapping the unused segment for a "back up" of the same size I'm using.
