I agree. A shoe store can't claim to be open if the doors are open but you can't try on the shoes.

I was in London last weekend and found it funny to find a lot of shops with "Browsing only" signs - i.e. for certain periods you can have a look around but can't buy anything. Almost the polar opposite of this case.

...though I didn't go to London just to see those shops.. ;)

Oh man, that post made me wish I was in college again...I spent my first 2 years at a techy school in MA, 78% male and you had 2 social options: frat or geek. I didn't fit either but geek seemed much more interesting as long as I could still attend frat parties for the women and booze. Most of the school had wednesdays off and my nerdy group of friends would do all sorts of junk between 12-5am on tuesday nights, sometimes just ihop and 24 hour grocery stores etc, other times we drove to some random friend's college in the middle of the night to 'visit' (mainly we wanted to have contact with anything female). we drove all over NY, way up in Maine to some college on an island that wouldn't let us in until 6am, montreal, you name it. We only had 1 mac nerd in that group, but if the NYC store had been open it would have been a likely trip.

Oh, to be young and nerdy with an odd schedule and too much free time again...

On the maintenance though, you'd think they might do it in 2 waves so they always have a few computers available...the place is seriously its own world, I too would have been disappointed if we couldn't even fool around on the machines. We probably would have been too busy trying to talk to the female employee to care though. Thank god i transferred...

dang, i'd be mad too if i drove all that way and the store was like that. i hope that you just got there on a bad night, and it's usually not like that.....i plan on visiting that store sometime in my life....

i was in nyc on november 2006 and visited the store after coming from soho around 3am. i must say that it was a pretty nice site but still kept thinking to myself why the heck would people come in at that hour to have their machines fixed or get an "apple fix".

anyhow, then we should really be mad as well for those places who claim to be 24/7 but closes during major holidays. :D

People..people..people.. you guys got it all wrong.. The reason we were so disappointed was that Apple store was our last hope... We DID go to Times Square to cop some crack and the dealer said he had no rocks, then we went to the east village to cop some dope and the guy said he was all out of smack, then we went to Washington square park to cop some major weed and he said he just sold it all to a girl scout troop. So, we went to Scores and did a few lap dances, charged up 1500 dollars worth of drinks on a credit card we stole from the dinner we chewed and screwed at and then were like, man, what do we do now. My buddy said crap, lets go to the Apple store and see which Mac Genius is the stupid one.....

:D lol...really?

Nah, but that does kind of suck that it was so dead and you couldn't even try anything out. Hopefully you just caught it on an off night. They probably decided since it was so dead that they should update their stuff then. They never expected the boyz from Boston to be coming. :D

OK.. For those of you still following this thread.. here is the conclusion of it all. My roommate just called the NYC Apple store to ask what happened last night and was that just a fluke that all the computers had a picture of a pad lock on the screen with "updating" written across it. She kind of chuckled and said, "to be perfectly honest we turn off Internet browsing so the homeless don't hang out more than they do already". She went on to say that they really cant be calling the police every five minuets because a smelly guy is sitting down there not leaving. They open their doors to everyone, including unsavory types. They legally can not ask them to leave. She said it was really their first winter open and she thinks it will be their last. She suspects they will close at midnight starting in October next winter. I guess too many homes less go down there to keep warm. So thats the scoop.. It had nothing to do with updating.. they were all locked.

dang, that stinks....the homeless ruin it for everyone else....i'd hate to see them close at midnight from now on.....

Instead of periodically coming back here to delete even more contrary-to-the-rules posts, write warnings to people, and maybe send some people away for a while, I'll just close this because I'm tired.

I'll leave it here for a bit so you all can see at least several bad things that are still left as an exercise for the reader of what not to do at MR. I'll come back tomorrow and wasteland it and take care of some of the posts if they aren't edited by that point.
