Dropped the 4gb in it and wow what an improvement! It even starts up faster much to my surprise but the real change is in large files and switching apps on the fly its waaaaaay better now than it was. Processing RAW files is faster although not by a giant leap but there is some improvement there. I wonder if my slow HD is now the bottle neck for this?

Anyways I am very pleased with the performance improvements of adding the RAM so thanks for the tips guys. I might as well try a new velociraptor as well its not super expensive and if it improves the speed a little more then double bonus for me.

What you want for your hard drive is a 10K Sata I hard drive and you will see performance improvement, but not a Sata II, you need to make sure its a Sata I.

I was under the impression that SATA II will run at SATA I speeds when connected to an "old" SATA interface.

Anyway, I'd suggest a 640 GB Western Digital... 320 GB platters; nearly as fast as the Spin F1, twice the space of the Velociraptor, and not too much slower... while being much cheaper. The performance difference really isn't worth it for that kind of money on an older machine like that. The 640 GB is practical in that it's a large drive, fast, and inexpensive.

You'll notice a performance improvement (app launches, startup time, file transfer/duplication, and in things like iPhoto; it's a good investment. But a Veloceraptor isn't worth the $300 in your case.
