I can't understand this - can somebody please help?

I have a person under 1 contact. That contact has a few e-mail addresses. And, sometimes when this person sends me an imessage, it comes as a completely different thread. It may even be during the same conversation. Why would ios decide that this person needs a new thread mid-conversation? I've had up to 3 different threads at one time.

iMessages is delivered via mobile # or by e-mail address. Is it possible this person started the conversation on their iphone and then continued on his/her iPad which forces a new thread because it is now using e-mail to send?
