I get a new phone every year and I’ve always walked into the store randomly and picked one up.

In store inventory is really hit or miss for at least the first few days after launch, often even into the first few weeks. The stores get new stock every day, but they may not get all models and colors and sizes each day.

If you’ve been able to randomly walk into a store and get the exact phone that you wanted days after launch day for several years in a row then you have been very lucky. This is why many of us set our alarms to wake up and preorder our phones right when preorders open up.

I think it’s likely that if you keep trying that you’ll be able to get a phone without enduring a month long wait, but you’ll have to keep checking the stores. They usually update their inventory every morning, so check first thing in the morning and if you see what you want, order it online for in store pickup.

Transpacific airfreight is still considerably constrained with the loss of belly space on passenger flights, so there is probably a bottleneck in getting them across from China as well, even after managing to manufacture them with the chip shortage.

They are always back ordered on the Apple website after the initial release. They are available elsewhere. You just have to search a bit harder.

How is it even possible

Seriously? This is standard around every iPhone launch. And it's much better than years past. iPhone 4, 5, 6, the delays were far longer than today. And there were huge lines and days-long campouts at Apple stores.

Worse, there were teams -- and I do mean teams -- of scalpers who camped Apple stores on both coasts. They would run in and buy every iPhone they could get their hands on. The iPhones were either shipped overseas and/or listed immediately on Ebay or Craigslist at 2x retail price. Every launch, these forums had scores and scores of posts complaining about delays, scalpers, zero available product, and link after link after link to all the scalped iPhones on reseller sites. It was a tripartite war between scalpers, regular consumers, and Apple. This resulted in escalating measures to buy new-release iPhones, including new ID requirements, one-per-customer purchase limitations, and on and on. This was a huge, huge issue every release. I think the editors here did a good job letting every single complaint and link stand, because it forced retailers and Apple to deal with the issue.

So I don't understand the original post. This is like, nothing new at all, and in fact it's way, way better than it used to be.

No issues here in Brisbane Australia. I am returning my iPhone pro 256 tomorrow and picking up a 512. no stress here. It might even be artificial stress in the states, as I do remember it being massively limited stock in NYC when I lived there.

It happens every year on pre orders, in store pickups become available quicker then ordering for shipment for some reason Im guessing Apple priorities store shipments before filling online orders.

I remember only 1 year having issues ordering for local pickup and even that it only took 3 or 4 days after release for me to get my hands on a new phone.

I do miss the days of standing in line and meeting people on launch days but not the stress of not knowing if the phone I wanted was going to be available by the time I got to the front of the line :)

I ordered one on launch day around 7:30am - 13 Pro 256GB Sierra Blue - for store pickup same day. You gotta know how it works, like always, either you pre-order at 8AM sharp or do what I did…if not, you’re screwed for a while.

Relax. My country probably won't even get an official release until November/December. Right now, the authorized stores are still promoting the iPhone 12 Pros and Apple Watch S6 to unknowing consumers.

Delivery dates started slipping about 20 minutes after preorders opened on 9/17 this time.. much sooner than I noticed for the iPhone 12 preorders. We're now 10 days from that, so you unfortunately get slim pickings.

How is it even possible they launch and instantly go this far back on delivery dates?
Do you live under a rock? You seen what's been going on with delays during this pandemic right? Seen the current wait times for a new car or SUV at dealers? On top of that they are higher priced. Seen housing industry too? Inventory low and prices high. So the past 14 years we've always seen this with new iphone...add pandemic a tad worse. Yet again another worthless thread.
