How 'bout instead of going with a company, we're just allowed to build our own computers and put OS X on them. :) :)

Didn't someone try that in 1984? :D

How about we just let Apple manufacture their own computers?

Obviously, I wouldn't allow Apple to license other computer manufacturers to build their own computers with OS X running on them. Why? Because I want my stability and rock-solid OS running correctly. Another reason is because I want high quality components already built into my computer, such as FireWire 800, etc. Mac OS X wouldn't be the same running on a different manufacturer's computer would it? I wouldn't think so...

Because this is all just good hypothetical fun.

If it weren't already gone, I'd go with Liebermann Inc. They seemed to have known what they were doing, even if they made some of the best vaporware ever.

What did they do? I remember the name, but can't remember what their computers were like.

Dell is kicking the PC industries tail they are the most innovatice company short of Apple.

Dell has one of the smallest research and development budgets compared to any other major PC manufacturer.

Dell may make cheap and quality boxes, but nothing is "innovative" about their products except the cheap price.

By the way, I have purchased four Dell desktops over the past three years. They work great, and I've never had to call support (although Dell's support is out of India). :)

I still say VoodooPC. They have an orgami expert working there who folds and moves cabling around so that the entire inside of the system is as clean and orderly as it can get. It's amazing, I'd almost go as far as saying that in most cases the VoodooPC looks better on the inside than any G5 mac. If i have to i'll scan the articles from Maximum PC sometime showing all this stuff. I seem to be missing the links online anymore.

Nonetheless, the quality workmanship that sets Voodoo machines apart from mass-produced PCs was apparent, from the aluminum chassis to the neatly wrapped, Origami cabling system. And the speed was there, too: The Fury was the fastest on each of our performance tests except Business Winstone.

ahhh i found it..

that article is if you look at it, from 2001. So think about it in terms of today because they're still doing that same stuff but with much better cases and designs.

Michael Dell is not innovative, he is a business man, like Windows. Steve Jobs is innovative, that's why Apple leads the way in new, they always have.

Sony Qualia. Just one ultra-high-end model. Ultimate bragging rights included.

http://www.qualia.sony.us/qualia_main.cgi
Sony lists six products in the Qualia line on its US website. None of them are personal computers. They are a digital projector, a 70" rear projection TV, a super audio CD player, head phones, digital camera, and minidisc player. An HDV camcorder is listed as a future product. And to repeat myself, there is no personal computer mentioned even as a future product. However, I am willing to accept that one is or will be available somewhere. Just give me a link.

Well, from my experience running Rhapsody on an IBM ThinkPad, I'd say that it has been just as reliable and stable as when I've run Rhapsody on any Apple system (PowerBook G3, Power Mac G3 and Power Mac 7500).

The only other PC hardware I've run it on was Digital... and that was okay.

The thing about running Rhapsody on Apple hardware is that everything "just works". With PC hardware I was always hunting for the parts and pieces that would work with the system, and to date I have never had sound working on any of my PCs running Rhapsody.

Personally, I would rather not have to deal with non-Apple hardware running Mac OS X.

My ThinkPad is great, but it was never as good as my PowerBook G3 running the same operating system.

No, a Mac is a Mac, and a PC is a PC, and a Mac is **NOT** a PC. You know very well what I meant and what those terms mean in their common usage. And no, I am not bellyaching about the x86 move, I am bellyaching about the thought of running the Macintosh OS on a PC, which the Mac is not.

A "Mac" will be a PC. But not all PCs will be "Macs".

If Apple ever did go this route -- which the markets would love in the short run at least -- it would have to be with an impact player, like HP or Dell. The latter is almost impossible because Mike Dell is a Bill Gates toady from way back and is very unlikely to do anything to upset him. HP has an existing relationship with Apple and often a tense one with Microsoft. Gateway/eMachines (same company now, remember) makes budgetware. Not a great match for Apple's image.

Probably never going to happen, but fun to think about nonetheless.

DELL, with Intel CPU. (why muddy the water with yet another CPU architecture?)
They know how to build an affordable system, which would ultimately be the number one reason to choose other than Apple for an OSX machine.

Alienware is tacky

AlienWare would be nice, but there such a gaming PC company ,but i would still like it. I'd have them use a AMD just becuz apple is going to be using intel. ALienwate's computer also look nice.

Alienware? are you mad? alienware computers are like a Nissan with tinted windows and purple neon light underneath. A mac has taste and armony.

Sony

Sony is the only company that would have a change at matching the design, also sony makes great hardware (but crap software i.e. sonicstage) , it would be great if they used Mac OSX as an option in their laptops. In return they could make all their games run on MacOSX.

I agree... I would love to have a VoodooPC (Along with my G5, of course!) but I simply cannot justify the cost, which is why I use a Dell as a PC at my dads house (from which I am writing this message, as the iMac here is in service) and I build my own pc at my moms...

But ever since that article in Maximum PC, I've had a facination with VoodooPC's.

But, if we were looking for a mroe mainstream manufacturer, I would say HP. HP + Apple already have a good relationship, so why not make it better?
