Alrighty then.

Here's my brief and concise review after a week of owning the iPhone 15 Pro Max Natty.

I upgraded from a 12 Pro Max. Design wise I like both and have no preference. As long as it slips in my pocket that's all I care about.

the good:

I like the Natty because it looks close to the Starlight MacBook Air in some lighting.

For the first two days I did experience warmth but that's because I was busy testing all the features including Pro Res Apple Log and large USB-C transfers that heat up the SSD.

But my portable Sandisk SSD gets MUCH warmer doing those kind of transfers and disk thrashing.

On day one I downloaded all my biggest game purchases, connected the 15 Max to the Studio Display, paired an Xbox controller...and gamed just like it was a console.

Impressive stuff for such a tiny device.

I'm an energy efficiency maniac and like to challenge myself on how little energy I can use while being as productive as possible.

Therefore my energy settings are efficient. I don't use Always On display on the iPhone (or my Watch) and set the screen to about 75% brightness.

I also make sure my app Settings are efficient. I keep notifications minimal. I only get system and email notifications. I don't want to be pinged by social media apps and I don't want them consuming background resources.

I don't give permissions to any apps to scan my Files, Contacts and Photos either. That's just asking for personal data to be sold and asking for these apps to consume more CPU when they are open.

After seven days I have charged the phone 5 times. I've not yet depleted the battery to 0% and not yet charged the phone to 100%.

There is no heat gate if you use your 15 efficiently and are not a click bait hunter. If there was a heat gate then the screen would dim, but it hasn't. Mine has stayed at the constant 75% I set it to.

So far so good. I like everything about the upgrade hardware wise.

The bad:

Connecting my SSD to the 15 is hit-miss. Sometimes it is detected, sometimes it isn't.

Airdrop is still hit and miss, but is becoming more reliable over the years.

I'd like to be able to apply a LUT to Apple Log footage in the Camera or Photos apps.

The Blackmagic app has a decent interface but Apple Log looks better in Apple's native Camera app. The Blackmagic app is overly sensitive to light and the auto mode results in blown out exposure. I have to force it to keep the ISO down.

5G and 4G performance. This isn't Apple's fault. My provider just has **** coverage on my street and especially inside my building. If I walk 100 meters down the road I get about 350Mbits/sec.

The 15PM is surprisingly much quicker/snappier. I waited several days to make sure this wasn't a placebo effect, but no, the 15PM performance increase is very noticeable compared to the 14PM. And I ran the 14PM on iOS17 beta and official release, so it's not the OS.

As someone that also carries a Samsung phones. It's about damn time I can just press a button (even without turning the display on) to activate the camera via Action Button. Also like that I can take quick video by holding the Action Button while in camera. I rotate between Camera and Flashlight, and the Action Button has already proven to be a better than just a silent switch.

Thanks for sharing. Though I wouldn’t say keeping brightness at 75% is efficient, I’ve kept mine at 25-30% since the iPhone X except when outside if it’s quite bright.

I do think this is 100% Placebo effect. Having used the 15 Pro Max for a week and still occasionally picking up the 14 Pro Max, I do not notice any difference whatsoever. Hell even a 13 Pro Max doesn't feel that much slower. Even Apple themselves quote only a 10% improvement. With the amount of power they already have it will not be perceptible in aything else than the most demanding tasks.

Naw for me, it's definitely no placebo. With the exception of large games, all apps open instantly as if they were already opened in the background. And I always close my apps out of habit. And even the large games load much faster.

I didn't set as new, so the settings on both phones are pretty much identical. I just shipped the 14PM for trade-in today, so I definitely had time to compare.

Even the animations run faster and smoother. And again I compared both on iOS17 official release.

This probably has more to do with the fact that the 15P and PM both have more ram vs last gen models.

That's probably part of the reason. I think it's the configuration of A17 vs A16 cpu cores that makes the biggest difference.

A16 Bionic
6 core CPU
5 core GPU
6GB RAM

A17 Pro
6 core CPU
6 core GPU
8GB RAM

Apple stated the A17 pro is only about 10% ish faster in processing speed vs the A16, however it’s 20% faster in GPU speed thanks to that additional GPU core.

The Ghz of the CPU cores are different though.

Do you guys see a difference between the 6GB Ram on the 14PM and 8GB RAM on the 15PM? For me it’s a huge update, the apps barely reload on the 15PM. Actually since last friday I have seen only two reloads of apps. Of course I don’t use huge apps like games, only the usual stuff- messages, facebook, Safari etc.

Just got my Pro Max yesterday, I set it up as new with no backup. The phone didn't even get that warm when I reinstalled all the app. Out of the box, the battery was at 80% charged. I finnished setting it up and resync all of the music, photos etc... 5 hours later with 35% left. Since then, the phone has been cool as a cucumber, no problem whatsover. Don't know what the fuss is all about.

I came from a XS max so the 15 PM is astonishing to me, the 120hz screen, the overall speed and responsiveness. OMG. Oh and I was never that big on smartphone camera but the photos out of this phone is actually quite impressive for such a small sensor.

Apps that open instantly on an iPhone 15 pro Max open instantly on a 14 Pro Max as well. It is actually in complex task that take more than a few seconds where you would actually notice a difference.

See for yourself, search in YouTube for a few speed comparisons, they all perform the same. If the 14 Pm was slow then something was wrong with its config.

I guess everyone has their hobbies?

But good to hear battery is good for you. It is slightly less than 14PM for me. If you turn off a large set of features it makes sense it would last longer.

Zen and the Art of iPhone Maintenance.

My computers and other gadgets tend to look and work almost like new after years of use.

I came from a 14 Pro to a 15 Pro Max. The 15 PM is clearly a further evolved phone, as expected. It has been running noticeably cooler than the 14 P did with my workflow, and it seems smoother but that is not quantifiable. The larger display is significantly helpful with my recent vision deterioration. The sound is clearly improved. The pocketability and hand holding of the larger 15 PM has not been an issue at all.

The 15 PM camera system is better. I have the action button configured for the camera and it is a huge benefit to my photos workflow. If Apple would talk to some pro photogs they could better place the button for shutter release, but even as is it is a great improvement for me.

Readability is important, especially as we age and our eyes get weaker. A screen needs to be sufficiently bright for healthy reading.

75% is what I use as my max level. 50% is about the minimum. I never go full brightness. My laptops are at about 50% and Studio Display about 35-40%.

I am on vacation and been using 15pro and the 15PM. i was leaning towards the pro all along because of the size and weight. Turns out the PM doesn’t weight that much more than the pro.

Whenever I use the Pro with different apps at the same time, I can feel it heats up and the battery % starts dropping rapidly.

I haven’t decided which one to go for yet as I dont need 256gb and makes the price difference a harder decision

Big improvements for me are

Improved cameras so better processing

USB C is so ideal

Much lighter feel

That aside feels very much like all previous iphones. Action button is good but I keep forgetting it’s there.

I've noticed this too. Apps barely reload. No app crashes. Everything seems faster and instant. FaceID to log into apps etc. Just smoother overall.

You appear to be happy with the product despite some of its shortcomings. Glad to hear and thank you for sharing your experience on the product. 😊
I am happy myself on the product performance and light weight!

Any shortcomings are software based or third party apps. Those will be mostly resolved in updates, but the saltiness of Android trolls will never be resolved.
