1 year Free Apple TV+ do you have to buy directly from apple?

I received a refurbished iPhone X from AT&T's insurance program and got Apple TV + free for 1 year. All we did was activate it as you normally would and the next day I received the notification.
 
I bought a 2018 Mac Mini on ebay this week. Registered it with my ID etc. Couple days later I had an email stating that I have Apple TV+ free for a year
