Yes I want to know that too. I'm on GM but there's no updates showing in the mac appstore. If anyone can help out, please do! Thanks

Just search for El Capitan in the app store and then download it afresh. You'll be warned you already have it but can override this.

I had the gm on my IMac too, do I have the final version or do I need to install the version that was released today?

I ran a comparison between the GM Release Candidate and the Final release install file, but unfortunately this is not as informative as I thought it would be.

There are too many differences to list here, and I don't really have a good way to identify how much each file has changed. In addition, some changes are simply due to the app being re-signed by Apple. I'll try to point out some key differences.

  1. Obviously the first difference I noticed is that a all of the documentation and files that previously mentioned the word "Pre-release" have been updated.
  2. The installer package has been updated
  3. The Setup Assistant has been updated
  4. Kernel extensions have been updated (Maybe due to signing?)
  5. Bluetooth plugins have been updated
  6. Numerous Private Frameworks have been updated (WatchdogService, SystemMigration, Multitouch, Metal, etc.)
  7. QuickTimeComponents is updated
  8. System Profiler has some updates
  9. /usr/sbin/raidutil is updated
Overall, I would say that there are no major changes between the release candidate and the final version. I'm going to install it now.

As far as new/deleted files go, here are the only changes I found:

  • the Public Beta has a file called SeedEnrollment.plist in /private/var/db that the release version does not.
  • The release version has additional language files for the license in System/Library/CoreServices/Applications/System Image Utility.app

Wow it is such a huge difference for me. I am running now a 4K monitor + my macbook pro 2015 with iris pro without any animation lags !!! I already tried the GM version but there wasn't a significant improvement so I would never ever expect such a big difference to the public release.
Maybe it is because I did a clean install but I don't think so because I didn't really have much apps or data on it..

Plus the Help files for Mac no longer say 'content coming soon' all the help is present, but was not in the GM seed.

I know it's a controversial thing to say but I'm also finding the actual release version a touch faster than the GM Candidate. It's like WD40 has been squirted into my Mac – a few really small hold-ups here and there with the GM Candidate have been eradicated.

Note that I may well be imagining this!

okay i just updated to the public release, how do i know if i have the public release or if i still have the GM Installed?

Click Apple > About This Mac.

Click the TEXT that reads Version 10.11. A build number will be added to the end.

That build number should read 15A284.

Anything else and it isn't the public release of OS X El Capitan 10.11.0.

Thank you much appreciated. it is the final version indeed.

I'm on version 15A279b, but Software Update isn't giving me the option to upgrade. Is there no beta->public release path?

You need to download the main release from the App Store, as if upgrading from Yosemite.

As I keep explaining to people :) if you try the beta of a release, then you're on the beta path. You're supposed to upgrade to the next beta, which is currently 10.11.1.

Didn't end up getting the next beta from the beta path either. It was just "There are no new updates."
