10.12.6 external drives and sleep

Hello.
Are there issues with external drives connected to a 10.12.6 machine?

I have moved my data from a 4,1 to a 5,1 and am doing some file management etc and figuring out the long term plan / stability.

I never had any problems when the external drives were plugged into the USB or Firewire sockets on the mac pro. If you have a 3rd party PCIE usb card installed then you will get the "drive not ejected properly" error on sleep but the drives will remount without problem - (there is a whole other thread about this on this forum)
