Honestly, what will happen if you have 1 extra GB in RAM on an iPad functionality wise? My only guess is to future proof it for multitasking but I don't think Safari or games will work any better.

They should merge iPad and iPad Air lines to simplify the lineup.

The naming is confusing...

They should have iPad Pro, iPad(current Air), iPad lite(current ipad) or drop altogether for the iPad mini since its the cheaper basic one.

The iPad mini is not a good gateway drug to the world of iPads, but the older 9.7” and now the new 10.2” are what most people see as the “normal” iPad and what they are going to want as their first iPad. I love my iPad mini 4, but it is a horrible first iPad for the vast majority of consumers.

Like it or not, Apple’s convoluted lineup works from a sales perspective.

The additional 1GB of DRAM is useful for anyone who uses Safari with multiple pages open at a time, keeps multiple apps open as a matter of course, or who simply need some breathing room to help iOS run a little better and a little faster overall. It’s a good thing, if not an earth-shattering thing.

For those complaining about the specs, please point me in the direction of an android competitor in the tablet space with similar market share. Apple can push out devices that are underpowered because there is no competition. The tablet space is all Apples so until there is competition, they can keep recycling their old products and sell as new.

The iPad 10.2” is not underpowered. Apple knows it’s market and is building a tablet that will last 5-7 years. Looking at Geekbench’s iOS benchmarks, it’s clear that we’re probably going to lose the iPad mini 4 and the iPad Air 2 next year or the year after, but the rest of the devices on the list above them, especially looking at the Metal benchmarks (http://browser.geekbench.com/ios-benchmarks), there is a significant jump from the iPad mini 4 and iPad Air 2 to the iPod 7th Generation which is nearly 2.8x faster in Metal benchmarks. The saving grace for the iPad Air 2 is its single-core and multi-core scores, whereas the iPad mini 4 is significantly slower. The iPad 6th Generation is at the highest end of the demarcation between A9, A9x and A10 Fusion devices in both single core and multi-core and Metal speeds. There is absolutely room for several more releases of iOS to work on A9, A9X and A10 Fusion devices over the next 5 years.

Your point about Android tablets is absolutely spot-on. Google and it’s OEM partners couldn’t figure out what to do with the tablet space with a map, a guide and a guru. They’re lost, clueless and have absolutely zero vision for the space. Which I personally couldn’t be happier with as I have zero use for Android on any device.
