a simulacrum
i can't believe a proper update from Apple would mess me up this bad!
apps started crashing randomly, and now i've lost my external hard drive,
won't show up whatever i try to do!
anyone else have problems with 10.4.11 ?
is there any way i can go back to 10.4.10?

Try this:

Go to your utilities folder (/Applications/Utilities) and select 'Disk Utility'. Select your hard drive and Verify/Repair permissions. Also try verify disk. See if that comes up with anything.

Edit: And the profanity filter is here for a reason.. ;)

I downgraded from Leopard 10.5.1 to 10.4.11 and haven't had any issues.

who said anything about Leopard?

how can i repair an external hard drive that's not even showing up in finder?

any other ideas?

I was just stating that I've been running 10.4.11 with no issues. And the fact that I did a clean install to 10.4.11 and no issues yet. So maybe your the patch jacked your stuff up?

Patience.....

Now that you mention it, yeah same here. My two LaCie external FW HD's now take a l-o-n-g time to mount. Up to several minutes. Pre- .11, they always mounted immediately. Weird.... :apple:

plus i've got a PPC mac, don't know if that makes a difference...
i'm not really about to do a clean install now, i'm gonna get me Leopard for xmas.
i can't wait until then to access the files on my external HD though, i need to fix it right away!

what to do?

I just love descriptive titles!

You could of left the first part off...

As most veteran mac users know, always repair permissions and reset pram
before implementing any major software downloads.

Well I guess you need to decide what's most important. Waiting until Christmas with an unstable Mac, or doing a reinstall that will take you a few hours.

In addition, just because your drive isn't appearing in Finder does not mean that it won't be appearing in Disk Utility.

The Finder is only used to 'mount' drives. Drives which are unmounted but still attached should appear in disk utility.

Only other suggestions I have at this stage is to ensure that whatever cable connects your HDD to your Mac is functioning properly, and if thats not the issue try connecting the drive to another machine to see where the problems lies.

is there any way i can revert back to 10.4.10 ?

i plugged the drive into my pc laptop and it showed up in my computer

properly, i just got a pop up saying that i need to format the drive...

it's FAT, so it shouldn't really say that, should it?

i was thinking, if i can get it to work on a friend's computer, i could transfer all the data over to his drive, format mine as HFS+ and then give it another go?

oh, and Disk Utility says it's unable to read FAT, don't really know why and that's all it says.

i'm posting from my pc cause i'm running tech tool pro right now and scanning the external drive.
it's found one bad block so far but since it's 500gb it will take quite some time to finish.
i will update when it's done.

not to digress from my topic title though, 10.4.11 (other than the great Safari 3)
feels a lot slower...

after 10 hours of scanning, Tech Tool Pro says that the surface scan failed...
i've plugged it in through a USB hub i just got and am waiting to see if it will show up...
someone on the other topic about the 10.4.11 said that solved an external drive problem...

yeah, same here mate.

nothing seems to work with my external drive.

can anyone suggest a good piece of recovery software so i can at least transfer all my data to another external and try to format this one?

10.4.11 on my G5 is fine. Same speed as always, no crashing, Safari 3 is a big improvement. Try using the combo update instead of the delta update.

I am furious at apple for updating my Safari to 3.x without me knowing. I was simply installing the update and boom I had safari 3.

There are several things about safari 3 I HATE, and now I'm stuck.

Is there any easy way to put safari 2 on there or reverse the update in some way?

Correct me if I am wrong but there's a way for you to know what's being updated. Apple either mentions it in software update and if not it's generally on the website showing a list of fixes and updates, if you neglected to check that out then oh well, that's YOUR bad.

Anyways what's so wrong with Safari 3? I've had no issues.

I was afraid that I might have problems with 10.4.11 after reading about others who have had issues. After cloning 10.4.10 to my external drive. I unplugged everything and started the installation. After the reboot everything has been running smoothly for me, including mounting of the external drives. However, I do always make it a practice to repair permissions, clone, and unplug all unnecessary peripherals before doing an update; I know that others have had issues with external disks unless they unplugged them first (don't just turn them off).

Good 4 U for taking the plunge. Just because you read countless posts of people having issues doesn't mean you will. You have to keep in mind that people have so much stuff installed on their computer that you may not have which can cause all those issues.
Ever see a screenshot of someone's Mac desktop? The Dock is generally cluttered with apps that I have never used or even think of installing.
