I just updated to 10.5.4, but now all my preferences and user settings have been wiped out, as if its a new computer.

I've spent hours configuring it a certain way.

What do I do?

Of course.

Would rather not revert, 10.5.3 was incredibly buggy for me.

Any way to retrieve all the settings?

What I will be doing after making my final SuperDuper! backup of both of my Macs currently running OS 10.15.3 is to do a clean, fresh installation of OS 10.15.4, then do a migration/copying of needed files, folders, settings, apps, etc. That has always worked for me.

Usually, I would just apply the OS 10.15.4 Combo Update, without doing such a migration. But, given it has been quite a while since OS 10.15.3 has been released, and with all the issues I am seeing folks have with just updating to OS 10.15.4, I am definitely going to do a clean, fresh installation.

OS 10.15.3 has not been buggy for me, but of course I make a concerted effort to keep both of my Macs "lean, mean, and clean".

I'm going to suck it up and just reconfigure everything.

But before I do that, I want to give the Mac OS team a big shout out:

Well done, you guys are continuing to do a bang up job !!!!!!!

the only issue that i have noticed so far is that my fans on my iMac are constantly on. pram reset did nothing.

Thunderbolt ports stopping working? Shutdown becoming glitchy? All settings being wiped?

Boy, I'm filled with confidence to hit that Software Update button

Nothing happened to my user settings when I updated. As another person commented, one of the top usb ports on my 2019 Mac Pro was inoperative until I did a NVRAM reset. So far I have had zero other problems. YMMV.

Just make sure you have a bootable backup ... verify the backup ... If it's all good, then go for it...
Exactly! In fact, no matter which way I go (clean, "virgin" installation of oS 10.15.4, or update with the Combo Updater), I would not do it until, at the earliest, late Saturday afternoon, as I will do my usual Saturday computer-related tasks (while also cleaning our town home):

1. Run Onyx and Tech Tool Pro to do disk cleanup, maintenance, and repairs.
2. Run SuperDuper! and make 2 backups/clones for each of my Macs to 2, separate external SSDs.

But yes, your advice is much appreciated. Hopefully others will use it also!
