Wait, so when you guys talk about wireless problems what do you mean?

I keep getting these "Self-assigned IP address" problems, but only every now and then. Happens at the school wifi mostly. But I never had problem with my other UMBP's and they had 10.5.6 as well.

I should also mention that I called Applecare and the guy said it was because of my router using "older, unsecure, WEP encryption". Has anyone else been told this when contacting about wireless problems?
I mean that the router at my home is recognized by my computer, but it won't connect to it. It doesn't even give an error message or a reason why not. The router at my home have no encryption, so I don't know what's going wrong. I can plug in an ethernet cable and the thing works fine. We've tested the airport card and we know it works.

Again, does anybody know how I can downgrade to 10.5.5?

Rolled back to 10.5.5, everything is running great again. I'm not touching this **** until 10.5.7 is released...

ive had no problems with 10.5.6. my wifi and bluetooth work fine. i used to tether internet from my blackberry via bluetooth. when i still had my blackberry. glad i switched to the iphone.

".6" is definitely not the best I have heard of. Other sites shows issues similar to these. The whole update was not faulty, but for those who backup their old work and try to revisit it, some files may have problems. This was not an issue in 10.5.5 and 10.5.7 should fix that due to all the complaints on the internet.

Back a few versions ago, Jaguar was running fine, then an update to 10.2.8 messed up my connectivity to the internet. It took a few tweaks to get things working again. I called my ISP and they had a flood of issues with ".8". As a computer technician on both the PC side and Mac side, I keep my PCs and Macs they way they are right out of the box and have the fewest issues, as compared to more problems when I get updates.

Sometimes the updates are better and so far in ten years, I will say that people who bought a Mac with 10.5.6 will wish they had 10.5.5 or can't wait to see 10.5.7 if they routinely back up their files. It's a pretty big glitch and one I would only expect from Microsoft.

People have done this and are waiting for 10.5.7 just like you.

I am a 10.4 person myself and have been extremely happy with it.

I've had 10.5.6 on my MBP 4,1 (e2008) since it was released, and haven't noticed any problems other than what feels like a 10 second delay reacquiring wifi signal after wake-up. That may also be due to changing the router earlier this year.

Both my K and M are BT, and there's been no change at all. Up as quick as a bunny.

If your computer came with 10.5.6 I'm not sure you can downgrade.
If not, do you have a disk of 10.5 or know someone who does?
Archive and install then combo update to 10.5.5.
Someone else may give you better advice, but this is a place to start.

I don't really know. I have the discs that came with the computer. Nobody I know owns Macs. They even make fun of me for getting mine, but I know they'll change their minds eventually. Thanks for trying to help though. :)

Um, he's wrong. Indeed, WEP, though less secure overall, is a quicker assign than the more hardened protocols.

I should add, I'm running 10.5.6 with no problems.

10.5.6 working fine here..

I think I can call myself a "mac wireless disaster professional" as I've had problems with Apple laptops and wireless for ... years (on MBpro; wife's MB is fine) and I have to say ...

I noticed nothing different with 10.5.6. It seems to work fine. I haven't encountered any problems connecting, and hope maybe the latest round of changes has fixed the problem of: "I won't connect to selected wireless access points, too bad for you"

And my MBP also sleeps just fine under 10.5.6.

Count me lucky. Is it worth cloning your drive to a hard disk, scrubbing your current machine and reinstalling? [or, use disk utility to make a partition on laptop disk, copy files back to boot partition, and do separate "small leopard" install on smaller partition on laptop disk - and boot from and check that for wireless problems] I just wonder if there is something installed on your laptop that is hosing your system.

sounds like you need to run the console and see why you can't go into sleep mode.

it will give a wake reason. my girlfriend's MBP was giving reason EHC1 and EHC2 which were USB wake events. this started happening after she used her monitor's USB ports instead of a USB hub.

fixed the problem by trashing the usb preference file.

i have never had any problems like this with 10.5.6 - and bluetooth has worked perfectly for me (as on her MBP with apple bluetooth keyboard+mighty mouse)

no issues apart from the 10.5.5 MenuBar Battery Icon menu was better than the one thats in 10.5.6

but whatever.

Hi

2 days ago I decided to upgrade to 10.5.6 but on installing it hung up and decided to stop it and restart, started OK to previous version, tried again for second time to upgrade and it hung up again on installation.

This time on trying to restart , started a bit , apple logo and start chime came on , then it went off .

This same thing happens , tried all but no success
Tried to reset PMU/SMC/PRAM

Also tried the following but it never helped

Press X during startup Force Mac OS X startup
Press Option-Command-Shift-Delete
during startup Bypass primary startup volume and seek a different startup volume (such as a CD or external disk)
Press C during startup Start up from a CD that has a system folder
Press N during startup Attempt to start up from a compatible network server (NetBoot)
Press T during startup Start up in FireWire Target Disk mode
Press Shift during startup start up in Safe Boot mode and temporarily disable login items and non-essential kernel extension files (Mac OS X 10.2 and later)

Please can enyone help me out ?

there is no apple store nearby and did not back up my stuff

tried to keep Leopard DVD and boot , never worked also.

All these happened because of hung up while upgrading to 10.5.6

Thanks

Zenj

new to mac, having problems installing apps

I just switched from pc to mac, and I love my new macbook. I'm running 10.5.6 and I am having problems installing a few apps. Everytime I start the install for Limewire, Skype, and IeatBrainz, the app hangs in the doc and stops responding. There is an icon in my finder for skype and ieatbrainz, but I haven't been able to get the programs running. Is this a problem with 10.5.6 or one of my settings that I need to change?

My wifi seems to be painfully slow lately.. maybe this is the reason
really, im kinda relieved its apple's problem and not my router's. although it still could be my router i guess

I haven't watched the show since it had aired on Toonami. I'm going to have to watch Evangelion next.

Every other commercial DVD works on my Macbook and so does the first collection of Gundam Wing DVDs (1-25)

Maybe you should consider not being such a huge nerd?

:)
