I think it's a surprise that the 10.5" iPad Pro will have the once rumored lower resolution and it won't be the same as the 12.9", which would give a 326ppi. That resolution for the size made sense and I think, what most of us wanted but Apple have opted for the same ppi, with a brand new resolution to develop for. Maybe to keep costs down. Quite disappointing but maybe not a deal breaker.
 
Does iOS automatically scale apps to display natively at this res, or do we have to wait for app updates all over again?

Maybe the mods will merge the two.

Yeah I was really hoping for and expecting the 12.9" resolution, that would make more sense and I would love the higher ppi.

They've been encouraging the use of Auto Layout for a long time now, which essentially makes apps adapt automatically for any screen size. I wouldn't expect there to be much to do if the app had been made in the last couple of years.
