I'm one of the "lucky ones" that got a quiet 3870 fan. But I noticed ever since I installed 10.6.0 that the fan runs louder than in 10.5.x. Not crazy loud like when running a 3D game, but it's noticeably louder.
My guess is that the OS X drivers don't slow the card's clock speed when idling, like the Windows drivers do.
I thought that 10.6.2 would fix this, since it had an updated ATI3870Controller.kext, but no such luck.
Anyone else noticing louder 3870 fan speeds, and/or found a way to make them quieter in 10.6.2?
