    Hey guys,

    10.6.5 should be released soon.
The Release-notes promise better 3D Performance.
I find "better" a bit vague and would like to get some numbers.

What is the best (free) 3D Benchmark Tool for Mac OS out there?

Maybe we can get some numbers from different Systems before 10.6.5 is released and evaluate how good Apple's Job was..

    Cheers

Jumping the gun a bit? We can't test what we can't get.

I think he meant so we can test 10.6.4 first then when .5 comes out test that and compare. . .

I'll just see if my FPS improves in game, better than any other kind of test.

That's probably the way to go, especially since Valve and Blizzard seem to be the most active in engaging Apple about graphic performance.

All we care about in the end is performance in Starcraft II and Source games from Steam, not some raw benchmark numbers.

now that 10.6.5 is out I'm curious to see how much improvement there's been in terms of performance, as well. anybody have anything to report?

Downloading the update now, an hour to go, will do some quick tests in CS:S.

I tested World of Warcraft, and I could definitely see an improvement.

I tested an average 1v1 game in starcraft2 using my 27 inch iMac with mobility 4850. Performance was the same as 10.4

I averaged 22fps with 2560x1440 resolution and all settings to highest except shaders to high, which was exactly the same as 10.4

Under windows with same settings, I average 35fps.

    Yep.

Performance from 10.6.4 to 10.6.5 is pretty much the same. Which is much worse than under Windows. :)

After a quick test in CS:S (basically getting the FPS on the same map with bots while spawning, looking at a certain wall etc), before the update my FPS would go crazy from, say, 41-17, continuously changing (which it always did in game), but after the update it stays on the highest FPS, so in that case 47, rarely changing if I don't move. So it seems like the FPS will be more stable or something, which is fine with me.

    I've had about a 10% improvement in WoW. HD4870.

    8gb DDR3 RAM
    9400m

I haven't done too much messing around with it, but I seem to have a small increase in performance across the board on my 9400m. I no longer have the erratic framerate that I had before, which is the biggest improvement.

In WoW I get about 5 fps more in Dalaran, giving me anywhere from 25-30fps, compared to the 20-25 from before.

In SC2, I get about 10 fps more, going from 45-50 fps to 55-60 during the start of the match, and going down to about 25-35 compared to 15-30 from before with a maxed army on the screen.

Hmm, just got video corruption followed by a crash when logging into WoW. I've never seen that before so I'm mentioning it here as a warning. Rebooting now, and I'll update this post if it happens again. As mentioned above, I'm using an HD4870.

Edit: I've logged in several times since posting this message and have not had the issue again.

Appears the same at this point

    2.4 Ghz Macbook, 320M, 4 GB Ram

    Left For Dead Two -
Runs about the same. Still mostly unplayable at 1280x800, everything else at lowest settings.

I get fantastic frame rate under XP at 1080p.

I wonder if Steam has to make some updates before we see any noticeable improvements, but as it is, few 3D games are available on my machine. Granted, low end laptop, so my expectations should be lower... ;)

    Left 4 Dead 2 Crashing under 10.6.5

Left 4 Dead 2 no longer works for me. Crashes on start up.

Half-Life 2 does seem to stutter a bit less, but that's a very subjective statement at this point as I haven't played it in about a month.

    I also updated yesterday ...

L4D plays fine, but L4D2 crashes on start up. I get the intro video, and then the first "loading" screen, and then boom - crash.

I had the same issue with L4D2 not working after the update. I simply went into steam and removed local content (deleting more or less) and then did the install again.

I did not test it much as I did not have time but I did go into the game and play for a few minutes just to make sure all was working. Seat of the pants feel was that it was smoother but I'll do more playing tomorrow.

Just to update what I said. I just played a game of L4D2, resolution native at 2560 x 1440, everything was set to max quality and I was getting an average frame rate in the low 60's. As much as it is hard to believe, game performance beats the windows version now.

    I am running a Mid-2010 iMac 27" i7 2.93.

COD4 works again, and source based games seem a lot smoother. Still a long way to go though to be on a par with Windows.
