I have an early 2009 macbook with a broken superdrive. It has been wiped using disk utility, but due to the broken superdrive, when trying to instal 10.6 it hangs at the 28 minute mark and won't go any further. Im trying to make a copy of the 10.5 original discs that came with the macbook onto a USB but am not sure how to get it to install from the external hard drive?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you boot, hold down option. You will be presented with the option of booting from any usb devices as well as any valid partitions on your internal hard drive. You could grab an inexpensive usb optical drive but I think a better investment of your time would be to clone the SL DVD onto a USB stick. You can even install from one usb device to another usb device so you can do a "dry run" of an OS install and see if you like it. I did this when upgrading my kids' machines to SSD. I used carbon copy cloner to clone their drives to SSD connected with usb to SATA cables. I then rebooted, holding option and picked the copy I just made to make sure it was bootable. Then after I knew it was bootable, I ripped open their Mac minis and put the new SSD drives in.
