Im running 10.8.5. I need my security password to be reliable but it isn't. I can set my log in password, reboot my macbook and then sometimes it will boot without asking for a password. Has anyone experienced this?

My Mac is now updated and issue remains. It is set correctly to ask for password. Sometimes it will ask sometimes it will log on without asking.

"My Mac is now updated" (?) Updated system? New Mac?
Or, have you just reinstalled 10.8.5, and still on that system?

So, if you sleep your Mac, maybe for more than an hour, then wake it up, sometimes it asks for password, and sometimes just immediately returns to desktop?
And, same thing happens when you shut down (not sleep)?

If you are still on Mountain Lion:
If you want to always enter password, re-check your settings:
Security & Privacy pane:
Make sure that "Disable automatic login" is checked, and "Require password immediately after sleep or screensaver is set.
You must unlock that pane to make changes.

Do you also have File Vault turned on?
As you may know, if you are using File Vault, that will ask you for password to unlock the boot drive, then ask for your password again at the login window - that absolutely will disable automatic login, as File Vault won't allow that auto login. ( I am not suggesting that you use File Vault -- only that File Vault will directly affect your security settings.)

These are my settings. It will occur after sleep and after a shut down. I never know when it is secure or not.

In the screenshot you show, the "Disable automatic login" checkbox is unchecked. This is essentially the same state or configuration that is shown in your post #3.

The checkbox must be checked if you want automatic login disabled.

I don't know why it would become unchecked, if it had previously been checked.

Yes, if you always want a login window, particularly after a restart, that box (Disable Automatic Login) needs to be checked . Remember that you need to unlock that Sec & Privacy pane before you can make any changes.
