I'm actually thinking about buying the Canon Optura 300.

Let's see...

Option A: Apple: $999 - 100 = $899 + tax

Option B: B & H: $739 + shipping

Still, the Apple store is a cool place to kill a few minutes while I wait for my pizza at Bertucci's.

Do EDU customers get the 12.5% off, or whatever it is, in the retail stores? Could this be combined with the 10%? That would be nice 🙂 Doubtful, though.

it's apple's educational discount - applies only to apple products.

Well, if I stop paying for .Mac and use that towards a new camcorder, that's more than 10%. I've had .Mac/iTools since it started and nothing has changed.

It may be Apple's discount, but you definately get money off stuff that's not an Apple product.

Example:
Canon ZR80 Digital Video Camera
$399 regular, $379 with EDU discount

Looks like its maybe about 5% for some third-party stuff. And in any case, all I asked was if you can use it in the retail stores...

The price it should be is the price people are willing to pay!

From what we can see, 100,000 people are willing to pay $249 - but cos you're a bone-fide genius, you would rather that Apple would have lost $5 million dollars in sales.

Please send me your CV that shows all of your sales/marketing qualifications, so I can be sure never to employ you in the future.

😕

What if at $199 they sell 300,000 units??? Economics 101. You must have slept through that one.

If it costs them $198 to make it, package it, market it and distribute it (not saying that it does, but as an "if" situation), then selling 300,000 at $199 is not favourable to selling 100,00 at $249.

An extreme example, but the point remains -- it's often better to sell slightly fewer units at slightly better margins, than to sell a boatload of items for razor-thin margins. At least, that has clearly been Apple's point of view for a long time now. Dell, on the other han, would likely argue the other way.

Remember that figure is just pre-orders, and doesn't mean they won't sell any more of these things. I think it's a pretty remarkable figure, given the similarity between the mini price and the 15GB price.

I don't get it personally, and I don't think I'd choose a mini over the 15 GB... but clearly, a good number of people have chosen to do so, and likely a good number of people will continue to do so.

I stand corrected. The Optura 300 is another exception. At least in the DC area the going rate for this camera is about $760. And no the Apple store will not match local competitors.

Also a note. Depending on the state that you live in you may still be required to pay sales tax on items ordered thru the mail. The term is a "Use Tax". Though states have not yet gone after the general public on the tax, if the belts have to be tightened any more they are within their powers to go after unpaid Use Taxes.

This is one reason that catalog showroom stores went out of business.

here's another reason to "over price" at the beginning: in general, prices can only come down.

i think $250 is a good starting point - sell them at a bit higher price point to those that are very eager. drop a bit (i personally predict a drop to $229 in a while, not sure if $199 will ever happen.) later to get even more people interested...

I'd like to add that since I bought my 15gb iPod (that I thought was fairly priced) I have purchased:

1. Used iMac off Ebay
2. G5 2.0
3. iBook G4
4. iSight
5. another 15gb iPod
6. Panther
7. Bluetooth Keyboard
8. Bluetooth Mouse

While I'm sure I am an extreme case you have to consider the long term effect of getting someone to purchase their first Apple product. I am addicted!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. I bought my first iPod in July '03.

Well, seeing as the ad says, "... 10 percent discount on any digital camcorder in stock, including the latest models from Canon, Sony and JVC...", and they carry both of those models; I'd say yes 🙂

XL1S

Canon XL1S:
Apple: $3999 - 10% = $3599 plus tax
Amazon/J&R: $3529 (free shipping)
B&H: $3539 (+ shipping ?

Again, makes 'em competitive, except for the tax. (Although we all voluntarily file and pay our use tax forms for mail order, right! 😉 )

BTW: Canon is giving a $500 rebate on the XL1S right now too!

Recommendations?

OK, so the 10% has been debated to death. How about some recommendations? Of all the cameras that Apple sells, what's the best one for the money? I remember reading some criticisms of the earlier Canon cameras that in quiet shots, the noise of the camera's motor gets onto the tape. 🙁
Do the current models still suffer that fate, for example?

Canon motor noise

I get a little bit of motor noise with my Canon GL1, but it's only audible if I ramp the gain way up in FCPro. I usually use an external mic/mixer though.

Untrue. I compared the price of the model I wanted (Canon ZR80) and the price was exactly the same at other retail locations in my area, including Best Buy.

Unfortunately, the King of Prussia Apple Store said they haven't gotten any of the new cameras in yet.
