Hmmm.... I stumbled upon this site after searching for a solution for my crap ass 'earbud/handsfree' earphones that came with my iphone.... which, i might add still suck ass sound quality wise but then again I'm coming from M-Audio IE-30's. I'm not one to type long involved 'experiences' with products but felt compelled to do so after some of these... uh, well.... 'whining' comes to mind posts from those who are less than enamored with their iphones. Well, I guess I would tell you to shush for lack of better way of saying it. I love mine and compared to every other cell phone I've ever owned and/or used it's hands down the best. Honesty... It's not even close. Yes I'll be the first in line to complain about not being able to use my own ring tones or send a picture text but compared with everything else this puppy does who gives a poo? Jesus folks... It's a first generation 'cell phone'... not a bloody laptop. God knows I used to be the biggest Mac hater on this earth until I actually owned one but I never had the issues with getting the phone to work/authorized, bad edge coverage (and i just traveled from Cincinnati to Charleston SC with no drop in either cell or edge coverage... even in the mountains) or anything else I've heard/read. I left T-Mobile after 6 years of customer service that ranged from good to more often than not awful and don't regret my decision in the least.... I've never owned an ipod, never had a mac until the last month and a half of my 42 years on this earth and ever since i purchased my Macbook Pro and this phone i will never, ever.... EVER own another PC based product as long as.... well, that another story for another forum. Enjoy the phone for what it does do... not what it doesn't.

I can't get a signal in my god damned house even though the coverage map says I can get one. What the hell. I can get one outside, but I don't feel like texting from my front deck.

I'm disappointed.

I have been a cingular customer for several yers ( now AT&T) I have had signal trouble at home with my Motorola RAZR... the iPhone actually has better reception in my house. cant complain.

Great points.... Though I love my phone, there are a few things that deflate it's greatness for me.

No multiple person SMS. Wouldn't be too big of a deal if I could cut n paste the message, but I can't do that either. So I have to type "meeting is cancelled" 20 times in a row?

No MMS. The one thing I used the most with my Moto. Now I get SMS's from Att telling me to go to some website and type code in to receive it. The SUPER weird thing is people on ATT can't send me MMS at all, but if your another carrier, I get a message to view it on the web. That baffles me.

Deleting long text sucks. When I reply to an email and want to delete the copy, I can't highlight and delete. I have to hold the delete button and wait way to long listening to little clicks.

The audio adapter IS a joke. In the apple store where the iPhones are hooked up to real headphones, they look like a bunch of walkie talkies with the adapters sticking out of them. I can't believe they overlooked this. Anyone have any luck making the hole bigger?

Call log doesn't say incoming or outgoing. Sure you can get it with a tap, but why not put a little up or down arrow. Big display, plenty of room for it.

I can't wait to see what they address in the first update.

Still missing all my SMS messages, missing calls, feeling so embarrassed when my friends ask me to send them the photo I took, people on the other side are tired of me saying what, what, what was that, during the conversation, can't assign different ring for SMS, mail, just some of the ridicules flaws that
I did not have on my first cell phone 1997:mad:
It's name is Iphone, after all, isn't it?
Shame on Apple

Your right

Your right, the iphone is really bad. If someone reads this who hasn't bought an iphone, don't but one

iPhone junk mail work around

Wish it didn't require this to filter iPhone junk email, but it works. I have a desktop Mac that I run 24/7 (no sleep) and set up all my IMAP account email filters on this machine. These filters synch with my IMAP server and put everything in folders that I have set up; junk, news, politics, etc., which also synchs with my iPhone. Once it is set up it works pretty well. It cleans up my inbox. For junk that slips through I have a folder called New Rules that I put them in. When I get back to my desktop I update my rules to catch them.

Other iPhone Issues

1) The flat file system for iPhone Mail mail sucks. Another reason to use filters. This should be an easy high priority fix for Apple.
2) Need internet radio
3) No Home Page in iPhone Safari
4) No Flash Video

That no junk mail one is disappointing, I get so much junk mail its not funny :(

I don't have an Iphone just yet, hopefully when my contract ends with Verizon. this is the same email from a browser like Yahoo and Aol? Can you not go into your email accounts and change it in the spam settings? My husband used to get alot of spam until I went in there and changed the settings.

The one thing I really wish Apple would do is to enable file uploads (photos) via the browser. Microsoft Windows Mobile has this capability (a previous cellphone I had). It was nice to be able to upload a photo to a web site while on vacation.

Of course the iPhone browser is way better than anything else out there but with a file upload capability it would be superb.

Just make sure you do your part, okay?
http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Unlike most companies, Apple seems to listen. Sure, they have their "broken" processes, where one hand might not talk to the other, like everyone, but they are really trying to make a solid product. From taking iPhone's back with user-damage to addressing security flaws, its clear they want this platform to be around for a while... and users to be happy. At various iPhone Tech Talks they've been holding around the country, they're almost INSANELY interested in any bug reports, and describe to anyone how to wrap up and send crash logs to them.

That, and they really really wanted to catalog suggestions. When they showed this slide, I wish I had taken a screenshot of all of the suggestions they displayed under the banner of "Keep 'em coming!" (Not that I'd be able to share it.) There were a number of suggestions I hadn't thought of, but they had all the one's people most often comment on. My first thought was, "Um, wow."

Many of the items on the list are a little stupid, considering they need to be reworded to simply say things like, "I didn't know there wasn't GPS in the phone before I bought it." I'm left thinking, "That's not exactly iPhone's fault is it?"

1. Web Browser / File System Limitations - Can't download or upload anything. From ringtones, wallpapers, PDFs, or Mp3s... downloading and uploading... no can do.

I can agree with that. With 1.1.1 we have iTunes now though. Even as a preview service, identifying songs with friends is awesome with this. With sites like SeeqPod though, we've got even more options... at least for now.

2. Intuitiveness / Feature Limitations - Can't attach a photo FROM the email screen, you need to start from the album, and you lose whatever you'd already typed. Where is cut & paste?

Apple's clearly heard from customers about the cut & paste. I posted my own solution/suggestion too.

3. Hard to Type Fast - Typing fast requires a lot of practice. Landscape keyboard not available elsewhere except in web browser.

They've clear been hearing the landscape complaint too. Regarding typing fast though, I completely disagree. A guy I work with has an iPhone too. He just got his last month. We both we typing quickly within days. The problem is, most people that have "experience" using phone keyboards do what I did at first, and keep trying to "get it right". Once you realize that they iPhone is assisting you, you don't keep eyeballing every word while you're doing it, and you "trust the Force" (or in this case the predictive typing). This by NO means "sucks".

4. Messaging - Junk mail.

Welcome to the year 2007. Server-side filtering is the name of the game. I use Google. I honestly do not want junk mail arriving on my phone at all, if it can be auto-blocked. Can you imagine the drain on your battery as the iPhone consumes CPU cycles analyzing every message, and downloading it in full? It's brain dead in my opinion. Filter it on the server, and improve the easy of deleting multiple messages (which I think needs better options).

No AOL/MSN Instant Messenger clients, no picture messaging, no video-conferencing.

Wealth of IM options now, eh? But, we'll have to wait until February to get "notification" functionality like vibration and pop-ups. Picture messaging? I could see them doing an image-attach button and pulling in a photo from the album. They should do that. Video-conferencing? I don't support people dreaming up things they didn't ask if a device performed before buying, and complaining about it. Especially the far-fetched things. E... D... G... E. And aside from that, the phone's been pulled apart now. There's no hidden 2nd camera. Video conferencing? My bet is iPhone 2. Allow us to record video? I'd appreciate that one. I'd even savvy a digital zoom on the camera.

5. Menu Navigation issues - Where is the unified inbox?

Mm. They should definitely put that in there. It should be "off" by default though. Phones are confusing enough. I've already fielded IT requests by people who could easily goof up things if an IMAP account like Yahoo, had mail in the same box as a pop-mail solution. Complaints about when an "edit" button should and shouldn't appear don't seem like they're well thought out as a complaint.

6. Head Phone Adapter Blues - What's with the recessed headphone jack?

Yeah, this is bad. Luckily, I like my original headphones, and when I'm listening at work, I use the line out on my dock (which I have the iPhone plugged into all day). The line in is pretty normal. I've modified my existing headphones to use the recessed jack, though. Some headphones just let you pull off an extra layer of plastic to reveal a thin iPhone compatible jack. Screw the adapters, I can't bother with it either.

7. Can't use phone as modem OR Bluetooth file browsing - No tethering!

Oh, boo-hoo. I knew the phone didn't support tethering. At least not yet. I think February should bring an avalanche of solutions, including the 3rd party lovechild "tinyproxy".

No Bluetooth file support?

I'm wondering about this. I imagine Bluetooth file support will come with real access to the file system, but its certainly a glaring omission. Considering the ringtone and media file situation, this isn't a surprise for most folks who couldn't care less... but more extensive Bluetooth support is needed. It seems criminal that Salling Clicker would support remote controlling your Mac on every phone BUT the iPhone. Of course, we have Telekinesis and WiFi, but still.

8. Google Maps / No GPS! - NO GPS, NO GPS, NO GPS!!!

Wait for Navizon in February, or sadly, iPhone 2. People should know the iPhone has no GPS. I can't tell you though, how many times I typed in random street names or addresses around me, and got my location tut-sweet. The turn-by-turn directions really work fine, if you have a co-pilot worth their salt. Best Google Maps on mobile period.

9. AT&T 2 year agreement - Early termination fee of $175 if I cancel before the end of my 2 year contract on AT&T.

You sound like a U.S. Senator. Is this the first time you've bought a phone with a 2 year agreement? Is it? Really? Cause this is a list of why the iPHONE sucks, no why phones in general can be irritating (sans special deals/promotions that waive the normal requirement). Anyway, AT&T just redid their policies. Pro-rated ETF. So, you only have to pay for time-not-served. Seems T-Mobile is named in a case about this, that the Supreme Court of California has opened the gates for side-stepping binding arbitration clauses. Both Verizon, then AT&T recently jumped off the unblockable "fee" wagon. Problem is though... err... where are you going with that carrier-locked iPhone? Well, if you must, best be using iPhone Sim Free, imo.

10. This List - First time I had to make a list of gripes.

Hey, no one forced a gun to your head. Did you like anything at ALL? If the good doesn't make up for the bad, then go directly back to the store and return it. No harm no foul, and AT&T won't hold you to your contract either if you're only under 14 days into it (obviously the original poster is NOW, but just to say it). I have a pet peeve of folks that buy something, just to sound enslaved by it... an instant victim to some corporate pantheon of interests. Nah, get into something like DirectBuy. Google the terms "directbuy" and "trapped" to know what real pain is. Nothing like this "10-14 day return policy" garbage Apple gives people, DirectBuy is hardcore! I saw a funny King of the Hill episode on that topic.

I have had one since august and I have also learned to hate it. I don't care about any of the functions except email access and a good telephone.I did like the touchscreen and basic interface. My reception and talk quality are absolutely terrible. I had Verizon for 9 1/2 years (left to get an iphone) and was very happy with good reception even in the Everglades where i spend a fair amount of time. Now, with the iphone,I can not get through a call without every other word cutting off or a dropped called. I took my phone back to Apple last night and they replaced it with a new one. Same thing. It is now about 16 hours old and I have let the word out that it is for sale.I'll gladly pay the 175.00 to get the hell away from AT&T. I want and need a phone that works. On my way back to Verizon and I won't look at another iphone until other carriers get them. IMO AT&T is the worst.

Hi Frankie, instead of sounding like a "victim", and I'm not sure anyone ever talks about this nearly enough, but you should have gone to AT&T's website and checked their coverage map for your area. You could have easily determined whether you even had a shot before going through all the trouble of changing carriers. Also, worth noting that if you call AT&T, they can cross-reference you with the most recent information... although it sounds like they'd only be telling you what you already know.

You should never "glady pay" $175, because you hung onto a carrier that got you bad reception, and you weren't proactive enough to do anything about it. Phone service is a location-based issue. Wish it weren't, but it is. If you ever moved, even though Verizon has been good for you, at your next place, it might suck. Thems the breaks, buddy. Do yourself a favor, and check coverage maps next time. I don't care how interesting the phone is.

Thought I'd share a laugh at my own expense.

I was dissapointed with my iPhone after purchase. The features were all great but the phone was horrible. It was nearly impossible to hear anyone even in a quiet room and certainly impossible with any kind of background noise.

After two agonizing days of griping, I was showing off the other features to a friend who asked me "Isn't the protective plastic on the screen covering the earpiece?" And it was.

Now I have made a template for store bought protection plastic that I use to carve a slot to clear the earpiece. :)

Yeah, I know .. but I've been called worse.

I guess all the iPhone users are used to carrying diamonds in their pockets to worry about scratching glass.

You do know that scratching the iPhone's glass front is almost impossible, right?

Looks like the OP didn't actually find out about the iPhone in any depth before buying one. The reasons given in the first post would probably come out if the OP had actually done some research. It would be like buying a sports car, and then saying it absolutely sucks because it doesn't have 4 wheel drive, or a high driving position...

Throw a few grains of sand in your pocket...

My screen has several dozen very fine and very apparent scratches. I live in San Diego and I'm guessing the scratches are occurring during trips to the beach.

Ok then, it is almost impossible to scratch the front of a iPhone.*

*Unless you go to the beach and get sand in your pocket

It's a work in progress. Wising up as a consumer saves yourself a lot of pain/whining/hassle. It does what it says on the box and other information. Making snap purchases can be painful, and if so, then maybe the product isn't for you (yet maybe).
As shown by Cleverboy - the issues are already known about and being worked on, and if they aren't known, then you can report them easily. It's not the be all and end all, it's just doing a lot more things mostly better than the rest put together.

I put my iPhone in a ziplock bag when I go to the beach. You can even use the touchscreen through the bag.

Hmm. I paid like 30 bucks for my Belkin case. What does a ziplock bag go for? :D

Random responses forthcoming. Match 'em up of you care to. :)

Well I don't really want to "test out" the scratchability of the screen. I figured it's the same glass as the Handspring PDA's had and they were very prone to scratches. Although I would not put it past Steve to create a better, stronger and cooler looking glass.

I find that coverage maps for cellular co.'s are a crap shoot at best. I used to work in a building that was mostly concrete and Sprint worked great for me. Others claimed Sprint did not work well and T-Mobile did, others thought Verizon did and T_Mobile didn't. But I would assume in major urban areas all carriers by now will claim total coverage. With or without concrete buildings involved, they all are spotty in some areas.

It was assumed that the original poster did not check for coverage but I don't think it was ever implied. Or maybe I don't read so good. :) But since AT&T and Apple arn't hip to letting clients check it out first in their home or business ... you buy your ticket .. you take your ride. (Then you post a list)

Most of those original points above aren't overtly stretching, and it appears that 2.o addresses some of them directly. I certainly would not have thought about if a picture can be imported into an email easily before purchasing. But if asked, I would have said, Oh I'm sure it can be.

I played with one in store a while before purchasing and most those concerns would not have come to mind. Mostly just ..hmm what does this do? What's that do? But I think most loyal Apple consumers might, MIGHT take it for granted that if lots of other phones have a functionality that is handy that of course the iPhone would have thought of it. lol.

In fact a couple weeks ago I was wondering, why isn't there an app that takes advantage of the GPS feature for the consumer and not just for the NSA. That is now addressed as well. Good show. Can you imagine getting lost driving in some city and now being able to locate yourself on your iPhone and setting a directional to a familiar landmark? Brilliant. (Bonus if the waypoint serves Guinness)

Side note: Most cellphones can be tracked via GPS even when it is "powered off" these days.

lol. sorry .. i got long winded 2.0 :)

EDIT: Maybe replace my GPS references with ('Location-Based Services' (LBS) using GSM signal strength and phase to determine location of the phone.) Eitherway all cell phones are required to be able to be tracked.

Hehe - I can see a iPhone "Pub Crawl" app coming already. Like it!
