My first Mac! Was ahead of its time; I would probably still have it now if it wasn’t stolen. At least they had good taste 😁

Many are looking back fondly at the release of this machine, but for me this was the time that my Apple purchases ground to a halt.

I was just not comfortable then with a non-upgradeable laptop.

And then Apple followed this machine with the disaster that was the butterfly keyboard/TouchBar MBP, as well as the Tube MP, the loss of the headphone jack on the iPhones, the notch...

I mean, this was the beginning of the dark days of Apple for me.

Thankfully, Apple course corrected and the tech world caught up technologically.

Now Apple is better than ever, to the point where I was able to truly go Post-PC (at home at least... I use a PC for work).

And my wife still uses one as her daily driver. Basically 100% of the parts have been warranty replaced at some point (I think the SSD is the only remaining original component.) But it's been 100% rock-solid stable since the last warranty repair in 2016ish. (Yes, it had a failed part *AFTER* the original 3-year warranty that they covered.)

10 years later and we are still at 8GB base ram ..
In fairness, macOS is *FAR* more efficient with RAM than Windows.

But still, *PRO* machines should come with more now. At least the 14" and 16" (the "actually Pro" machines) start at 16 GB. But it is silly that the iPad Air comes with as much RAM as a base-model 13" MacBook Pro.

10 years later it’s old technology 🤣
Does not matter.

I still use the 2013 edition as my classroom presentation and office computer at the university. I did upgrade the drive with a higher capacity 3rd party SSD because Apple let me, it would even last longer if I could upgrade the 8gb RAM but Apple does not let me. The battery is still efficient, no stuck keys, i can connect my older Firewire 800 and even 400 backup drives via simple adaptors, SD cards, my SONY FX 1000 camera, the Apple Super Drive, I run current Adobe CS, Office 365, etc. all under the very stable HighSierra. The MacBrook Pro Sustainability Champion. I‘ll retire before I retire it.

Old Technology but working :)

Haha that was an exciting time in tech! Maybe things are more jaded nowadays but I got the same buzz when the M1 pro 16” MBP came out, wicked piece of kit. Except for the soldered ssd, I wish Apple would reconsider that approach

Hanging on my late '13 15". Still looks, feels, and works much better than almost every other notebook.
It will be a sad day when I'll have to replace it.

Exactly the same! That's my portable go to, and my desktop is a 2015" 27" iMac - which I wish I could use in target display mode, but nope :(

Legendary machines, Steve Jobs's legacy at its greatest. My 2015 15" rMBP still lives on.

Just picked up a 16" M1 Pro MBP, and although it is head and shoulders above in many ways, there's a few things that leave me disappointed and wondering if I should return it.

The loud clacky keyboard was a shock, but am getting used to it.

The worst issue I've found so far is the poor audio quality, much to my surprise, after reading all the rave reviews. Yes, the bass is impressively deep, and yes the flat and wide frequency spectrum (according to the charts I've seen) is impressive. But the character of the sound is awful. It's ok for music, but when watching movies or tv, the spoken voice has a muffled, hollow, sound to it. I find it sucks at my energy, and I've actually been reaching for my 2015 rMBP to watch those, rather than the new one, even though my old one has some colour aberrations creeping into the old screen after 7 years.

The old Retina screen is not called Retina for nothing, it is fantastic, and although the new screen is definitely nicer, it's not enough to have any wow about it, the reviews have overcooked this big time. I haven't even noticed the promotion, even when switching back and forth between laptops. I don't know what people have been raving about with this.

The audio is a huge issue for me, as I use the external speakers daily, and.... I'm struggling to deal with them. I've installed Audio Hijack to see if I can mess about with the EQ and it has improved it somewhat by turning down the bass which cuts out a lot of the weird hollow muffled awkward audio, but it still doesn't sound as nice and relaxing as the my 2015 rMBP.

Damn. Wondering if I should take it back and wait and see if they really do put out a 15" MBA, and without the inauthentic muffled hollow bass. The 24MB RAM and M1 chip will do me just fine.

who uses the built-in speakers in a laptop though?

I was in the Apple store and came so close to buying one of these, until I realized doing so would make me late for work. Priorities.

I was blown away by the retina screen and really enjoyed typing on the MBP. I waited quite some time to buy a retina MBP as the M1 MBP was my first Apple laptop.

I still own this! Battery life is not great anymore but thr screen is still amazing
