Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but the 1st Gen Edge iPhones maps now has a blue dot, and it seem incredibly more accurate.

For Exchange users...

The old "Passcode Lock" feature (required by some IT departments) had delay times of up to 15 minutes where you would not need your password to get to your phone. There is now a 1-Hour option and a message about longer times being less secure.

Things I Haven't Seen Mentioned (On The First Page, Anyway)

New features I've found:

- Any favourites you may have in the old YouTube app can be merged into your YouTube account when you sign in to the new YouTube app. A dialog box will ask you if you want to and then add them automatically for you.

- The iPod touch Bluetooth can be turned on and off in the General menu. I've been able to successfully pair my iPod touch with my computer and trigger proximity based actions.

New "features" I've found:

- When you first turn it on, before sliding to unlock, you can't adjust the volume anymore. It used to be you could turn it up or down before unlocking it, a useful feature when you're somewhere quiet and don't want that loud "click" sound, but otherwise use interface sound effects.

- Playlists with spaces and/or dashes at the front no longer appear at the top of the list in Music. They go straight to the bottom but once there behave in the following order: spaces, dashes, asterisks, bullets. There goes my organization system!

- Any adjustments to the order or placements in bottom menu bar in the App Store app don't stick. No matter how many times I've closed it, opened it, synced, and tried again, it's not working. Is this one just me?

All the songs in my Recently Added Playlist are now at the top of the list on my 3G!!! This has never been fixed dating back to all the iPod generations. No longer need to scroll to bottom to see what I songs I've just added. :D

I noticed something interesting. The phone, messages, and and ipod app icons are new. The 3 now have diagonal lines that go across the icon. Not really a new feature, but an interesting addition.

I also noticed that the bookmarks in Safari are thinner. The links are about as thin as the text in them. I don't know if that makes sense or not... oh well!

Issues and Praises

Mail now has the option to disable remote images, so you get a question mark instead of a pic, if it's on some server. Well, where's the option to "allow once" or "allow always from this sender"?? Very annoying, so much in fact i had to reenable pics, but i would want it for ads and spam.

What's up with the multiple calendars? Viewing 2 sets of calendars is completely unnecessary and pointless...it always synced perfectly before, now it only syncs one set over mobile me and the other ("on my iphone") i'm not exactly sure?

Same thing with Contacts...when i search, i now have 2 of everyone. i realize it can be two completely different set of sources, but how do i just get one on there?

Sometime when going into the App Store on iPhone, the "data swirly" freaks out and doesn't go in smooth circles. it goes only a quarter of the way, then repeats like 2-3 times, then half way, the back to 1/4 for a few times, then all of a sudden catches itself and starts behaving correctly. Plus, after that, the icons on the bottom are reset to default. i put the "Updates" icon as one of the first 4, but sometimes it resets. Anyone else?

NEW: In Maps, directions are smoother. The next direction slides in nicely and has the distance to the next action PLUS that action on the same screen, as shown below. Previously it would've said on action 6 "Drive 63.3 Miles"...action 7, "Continue on I-91 N...." I like this new way much better!

I'm starting to worry, that I seem to be the only one who craves a week-view in Calender.app. How can people work only with days and months?! I was hoping Apple would implement that but alas, I was shaking my iPhone when in landscape and screaming "give me a week-view!!!".
Am I missing something here? Anything hidden on that level?

Absolutely!!! It's the one thing i CRAVE!!

as an added level of security you can if you use screen lock have the phone erase itself after ten failed attempts

m

That was there previously.

Bluteooth and external headphone on 1st gen touch

I have the iMuffs external bluetooth headphones. It used to be that pressing play/pause on the external controller (plugs into the port) would quit the current application, and change to the music player. This was annoying: I want to keep in my current app, but just pause the music.

But no more! This is great. Now, the music starts and stops, but the current app remains active. Thank you!

(p.s. Probably bluetooth has changed on 2nd gen iTouch as well -- this is just for the 1st gen.)

I'm not sure if this has been covered (and I'm not completely sure if this even is a new feature) and I guess it's just for the 1st gen ipod touch, because that is the only one that does not have any speakers:

-when playing songs or videos and you don't have any earphones/speakers connected, the video/music player has a new, slimmer look which doesn't feature the volume controls (because there is no need)

When you go to the numbers and punctuations part of the keyboard, if you hold the period, it'll give you the option to have 3 periods... and other punctuation marks have different elaborations

auto lock

i discovered one more thing.. that is ... the max time for auto lock is only 5 mins.. before we could select never...... dont know if someone noticed it..

safari now has contact and password autofill (found under safari in the settings app)

New Notes Feature

Previously, if you launched the Notes App and you had no notes saved, the app would automatically open a new note and the keyboard would pop up. It no longer does that. If you have no saved note, it just says No Notes.

Other addition

Something is not yet on the list:

You can now have both one Exchange and one Mobile Me account synching contacts (until then, it handled only one sync method and would erase the other contacts). The contacts are kept separately and synched independently, but can be displayed alltogether by selecting "all contacts" in the Address book

Note on Shake-to-shuffle Use

Shake-to-Shuffle works if you are in the iPod app. Shaking outside the iPod app invokes other behavior, such as Undo in some apps (examples: Mail, Messages). If you want to shake to shuffle without switching to the iPod app, you can double-tap Home to bring up the iPod controls (if you have it set to do that) and then Shake-to-Shuffle will work.

Ive had MobileMe and Exchange for quite some time now. I think you are referring to it wouldnt let you manually sync contacts and Exchange contacts. You had to have Mobile me to have contacts outside Exchange.

Not sure if thats changed in 3.0

Where is this? I'd love to have it working.

3.0 has LDAP Directory support. It now searches through my company directory as I'm typing a name or email address.

previously if you device was in a dock and playing music while in other applications, whenever you skipped tracks it would take you too the iPod Application. it no longer does this (found by DscrdngAllThght)

If this works with my iTrip Autopilot then I can finally leave Maps/GPS running full time and not lose it when I skip songs. Thank you :D

Two or three of these little-known "minor" changes mean more to me than some of the big headline features. (As is often the case with Mac OS X updates as well.)
