Holy Hell! Battery is physically expanding! Looks like its about to explode

My battery all of a sudden just got bigger on my Macbook Pro. It is the same one in my signature and have been using it fine for a while but then today this morning I noticed the Macbook was very unbalanced so I looked under it and I noticed it had popped the cover off and my battery had expanded in the middle (it is getting fatter). I want to fix this but problem is that I do not have Applecare or nor do I have a lot of cash on hand (college student).

My questions is would apple fix this kind of issue for free since it seems like a hardware issue? and most importantly should I continue to use it? This is my only computer but I feel as if the battery might explode any minute now and getting a little worried.

Edit: Took the battery out and connected it to a power source so I can use it without the fear of exploding batteries :D

It looks as if the closest Apple store is about 1 hour away from here. Although it might be a good time to go since I am also having some trouble with the trackpad.
 
A expanding battery is never good, and I doubt Apple will repair off of Applecare but it doesn't hurt to take it into them and if lucky you may catch a genious who is having a good day.

If not your going to have to fork over the cash if you want to get this prob fixed, on the other hand you can always remove the battery yourself, but this will not fix the casing that was probably damaged due to the expanding of the battery.
 
You should call Apple and tell them everything. Most agents will want to help you get a replacement battery for free, even though the mbp is technically out of Applecare.

In any event, try to avoid using your computer on battery power if you can. A swelling battery is never a good thing. The Applecare rep will tell you the same thing, but I thought it needed to be said.

If Apple won't help you, check with your credit card company if they'll replace your battery for you under their extended warranty program.
 
Call Apple first thing tomorrow, explain your situation and ask to speak to a Product Specialist (since this is a safety concern you should be transferred automatically). If it's not under warranty, Apple has no legal obligation to replace your battery free of charge, but exceptions can and have been made in extraordinary situations. Remaining polite, persistent, and expressing concern for your safety will be your best bet at obtaining a free repair.

Also, if this computer was purchased with a credit card, check their terms and perks: some cards extend manufacturer's warranties.

Until then, try not to use the machine or plug it in.

Its a first gen Macbook Aluminum Unibody with the removable battery. Im sure when he typed MBP it was a honest typo because Apple decided to call the Macbook a Macbook Pro.
 
It does have the removable battery and it is aluminum.

I will contact apple first thing tomorrow morning and see what they can do.

Thanks for those links. I was reading through them and I just learned that it was the expanding battery that kept my trackpad from working properly! (couldn't right click and was hard to left click) Once I removed the battery the trackpad started working perfectly.
 
Made an appointment with Apple. Went in to the store and they took one look at the battery and gave me a brand new one right off the shelf. I love Apple :D
