Will i be able to update to the official iOS 4.2 today if i have already updated using the iOS 4.2.1 GM last week? Or are they both the same?

Now that the question was answered, I wonder how many people will ask the exact same thing 🙂
I am sure we will see ten more threads about that.

So I'm assuming if I downloaded just the first GM, iTunes will see the public release as new version that is available for download.?.?

Anyone have a direct link to download the update?

I have the beta 4.2 (not 4.2.1) and iTunes is telling me I already have the latest version and does not update. I need the direct download link so I can manually update.

iOS 4.2 Beta 1 to Public Release

I have the first beta of 4.2 on my iPad Build # 8C5091e. I'm not a registered developer but got the files and installed it when the beta was first released. When I go to update my iPad to the public release it tells me my iPad already has the latest software installed. How can I get the public release on there?

It's not going live till 10am Pacific time (That's in an hour).

I read that but it tells me that 4.2 is the latest and that it's already installed. That's why I was wondering about it. I guess I will try again in an hour or so.

I'm having this problem also, updating from 4.2 beta 3 iTunes simply says that I am already up to date. Could anyone help?

4.2 isn't out, so an "update" won't do anything at the moment

If you can't upgrade normally from a Beta/GM to the final build then do this

Go here

http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/

When they post a link to the official 4.2, download it and then (alt/shift + click) to upgrade to the newest 4.2. This website does NOT host any betas/GM's, but only LINKS to official apple firmware from apple.com

*Bangs head against wall* Does anyone read!?

I agree. One would think that if someone has the technical "know-how" to both find and manually upgrade to 4.2.1 that they wouldn't be getting click happy on the update button. THIS MEANS ITS NOT AVAILABLE YET PEOPLE! Apple didn't magically block the "check for update" button from working on your computer. 😛

I have been click-happy on the update button, and it just noticed that the update was there. So, I'm pulling it down now!

Could someone confirm what the build number is for the final 4.2? is it really the same as the 4.2.1 GM for sure?

Something strange happened to me with 4.2.1 GM. Last night I was customizing settings and working on it without any problems. This morning, it prompt me for an unlock password, which I never setup.
In the end, I had to reset and restore from backup; I only lost the customizations I did last night. 🙁

I don't recall ever enabling unlock password, but if I did, then there's a bug, as I didn't actually typed a password on it, and it wouldn't let me unlock it with a blank password either. Anyone willing to try this??

I have downloaded the new file and it's identical to 4.2.1 GM. I use the diff command in the terminal to compare both files.

I also noticed that during download, Safari reports a larger file size, but once it completes, both files are identical. I think Safari is miscalculating the file size.
