4.2 is public so that means that 4.2.1 is still in beta and will be released soon.

Right?

The most up to date public release ought to be 4.2GMb, which is a lower build number than 4.2.1. (Right?)

edit, thinking aloud.

since 4.2.1 is obviously a point release for whatever additional problems GMb did not solve, should it not be released after?

it seems like you guys are saying the public release of 4.2 is newer than 4.2.1 which doesn't make any sense to me.

Wrong.
4.2.1 is the public release.

I have downloaded the new file and it's identical to 4.2.1 GM. I use the diff command in the terminal to compare both files.

I also noticed that during download, Safari reports a larger file size, but once it completes, both files are identical. I think Safari is miscalculating the file size.

Which version did you download? For the iPad?

So if we have 4.2.1 and do a restore will itunes just download the current release version ?

Thanks

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

You can always download the new firmware directly and the manually update. There were links posted on the front page thread.

That's weird becuase the 4.2.1 (8C148) I got a few days ago, was 551Mb.

Yeah something is fishy for me. Once I downloaded the "official" Apple-released version, it turned into 578MB, too. And the files match the 4.2.1 released several days ago. All is well. :)

4.2.1GM == 4.2 Official

In case there was any lingering doubt of there being a difference between the 4.2.1 (beta3) and the official 4.2 release, here's the proof that they are identical.

The official release was downloaded from an apple.com server just a few minutes ago. Basically the same filesizes and SHA1 hashes prove that today's official release and last week's 4.2.1 GM release are bit-for-bit identical.

Hope this saves a bit of grief for some.
