Almost daily. Still working on importing a collection of CDs. 3000 imported...
So far it seems that most people never or almost never use their optical drive with the occasional person who uses it a lot. Not a lot of support for the optical drive anymore

I have an older 15 MBP and use an external drive quite often for burning home video DVDs/BDs or ripping commercial DVDs/CDs for iTunes. It drives me crazy that I have to carry around the weight and bulk of the SuperDrive, since I never use it on the go.
I'm planning on getting a MBP 13 in the next couple of months and really hope the SD gets pulled to make room for a larger motherboard with MPB 15/17 class CPU/GPU. If it does not get pulled I'll remove it myself. so that I can have a RAID 0/1 SSD set-up.
Mostly for importing CDs into iTunes. I'm old fashioned and I buy music on CD instead of the iTunes store. I also use RipIt now and then to put a movie on the HD to watch it while I travel.
I never use mine in the 15". I wish they kill it already.
I took mine out at one point, the mbp felt unbalanced and too heavy on one side without it, so I put it back in. So it's basically dead weight. I may replace it with a second SSD if the next MBPs don't impress me enough to upgrade.
