Yeah, I know. My laptops too old now. I need something faster to keep up. Bring on the new Mac Mini/Pro.

As a result, it runs flat out at 105C constantly, rendering while running music via YouTube and the like.

Should I be taking some sort of... remediatory action? New thermal paste or something? If I burn this thing out now i'll be up for a new MBP and I don't want to spend 5 grand to get something with a **** keyboard and no ports.

Here's my suggestion.
Open it up, being an older laptop the fans may have a lot of dust caked on the fins and/or dust on the logic board. If that doesn't help with the temps, definitely look to re-apply the thermal paste.

Yeah, the fans are nice and clean. It's open quite a lot as I have a hot-swap HDD in the DVD bay (that isn't very hot swap due to the case being the way it is, so I guess it's cold swap)

Guess i'll take the next step and throw new thermal paste on it - Wish me luck.

Maybe I should actually remove the fans, not just blow them out with compressed air.

All together. Threw together a quick FCP test - Interestingly, it'll still hit 105C when doing a render, but once the pressure is off, it returns to 60 - 50C pretty quick. Also, it idles at 40C now.

Before it was idling at 65 - 70C, and would take a long time to return to those temps after running at 100+.
