You'll need to rebuy it for the iPhone.... I believe they are separate games and hence rebuying is the only choice.

This is correct.

Some apps are universal, and will work well on both, but others (like Angry Birds) are optimized for one or the other and have two versions.

It will play on both, but it isn't universal. Mine shows just the little iPhone window, or I can expand it to 2x - but it gets pixellated.
