Listen, I know this has been asked many times before.

There are probably countless answers to this question
all over this forum. I apologize for asking again but I
must not have been using the correct search verbage
and I am in a position where I need to tether and have
answers about what to expect....

In short, if I am doing a lot of data uploads and downloads
with MyWi tethering is AT&T going to charge me for it?

Do they become aware of the tethering at all?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Havent been charged anything, but then again I don't use it much

 Yes, they are aware of the tethering. However, they're less likely to do anything if you stay under 5-10 GB/month. If you're one of those idiots who are d/l torrents and using a few hundred GB/month, we don't know what AT&T will do.
Don't abuse the system; use cable/dsl/t1 when you're at home.

I have been using it since it's been out. on my 3G and 4. I have played online games going down the road and videos as well. Like eastercat stated. Don't abuse it much and you should not have any issues.

If your uploads and downloads are not torrents or large movies then you should be fine.

Come to think of it I have never heard of anyone being charged. It is a fear of mine though.

Never heard of anyone being charged or getting caught. But, to be on the safe side, follow these guidelines...

If you exceed your data plan limits you will be charged in certain cases. While I don't use mywi I did use the commcenter hack and was billed for excess data. I didn't go crazy either, just 30 meg over my allotment.

Tethering is not stealing. Charging you for what you are already paying for is stealing.

That is honestly where my problems lies with it. It's crap for them to dictate how I used my data. It would be like putting a meter on my water line and charging me more for the water I wash my dishes with than the water I use to wash my clothes.

With my unlimited data plan, although I tether every once in a while, the most I've ever used is about 2 GB, and that was when I downloaded the TomTom app over 3G after my actual TomTom crapped out on a trip. I definitely have different feelings when I see people sucking down a blu-ray or two a day though.

Of course, since I am still under the unlimted
data plan I would think that there shouldn't be
any red flags raised about the data I use (and
I don't plan to download bittorents)

Getting charged for exceeding your quota has nothing to do with MyWi or the commcenter hack.

Cue the "tethering is stealing" Nazis in 3....2....1.....

Hardly Nazi's. I myself tether with MyWi when there's no internet available.

But I do it responsibly. Check emails on the go, surf some websites. No more than 50 mb additional ever.

People who abuse tethering and use it as a home internet connection and torrent/download video all day are the worst.

+1

I like to use it with my ipad. I have unlimited but very seldon hit 2gb a month. If I didnt have home wifi I would be the reason we now have capped plans.

Cant blame ATT, you can expect them to deliver 20gb a month for 30.00

My main concern was that its use remains mostly
undetected by AT&T as long as not abused.

Thanks everyone!

Hi!

My names "John" from AT&T Customer Service. Let's get started with you providing me with your phone number with area code first please.

Please provide me with your full name and last four of your social so we can continue. Thank you

Do you mind while I put you on hold while I check your data usage?

I believe there is something wrong with our system today, it show's your using an enormous amount of data! Enough for 3-5 people. Let me double check with my supervisor, please hold...

I got a $15,000 bill from AT&T because I used lots of data.

... of course it was because their billing system screwed up and dropped my data plan off so it was charging me per KB, haha... but they credited it.

I highly doubt they can legally charge you, how would that hold up in court? "We know you have unlimited data, but we think you're using more than we think you should under our definition of unlimited?" ???? LOL

Term # 103.55.6 in your contract: WE define Unlimited as "as much as WE think YOU should use, and WE don't think YOU need to watch videos, download songs, apps, or open more than 10 web pages per day. That's the AT&T Way!"

I'm so glad yesterday was my last day on AT&T!

It is stealing when you signed the terms and condition that the data is only for your iPhone usage.

OP: ATT knows that you are tethering but just won't do anything.
