Wish the 11" air was around to get the 512GB discount...

It's available for $1319 right now at the US Apple refurb store. Probably best to act soon if you want one. ;)

[edit]Just saw this, I guess maybe this is what @Pugly was talking about? https://www.macrumors.com/2016/11/01/apple-drops-prices-on-ssd-upgrades-for-older-macs/

I think the refurb is still a better deal, I paid $1800 for the i7/8gb/512gb originally.

Yeah, that is what I meant. Ideally I'd like the refurbs to get the new prices.

But that ultimate refurb is great. For the price of a crippled entry Macbook you can get the beast-mode Macbook Air!

I really think the top-end 2013/2014 11" MBA -- with 1.7ghz i7, 8GB RAM, and 512GB SSD -- is the sweet spot. It has all the bells and whistles expected today (USB3, 802.11AC, PCIe-based SSD, great battery life), but can be found for very reasonable prices in great condition today.

Then again, I may be biased as I have two of these :)

Not any more. Try that link now and you will see that it is no longer available, but it was in stock 4 hours ago when I posted. And I posted a link yesterday that also showed it in stock. Hope everyone got theirs, could be hard to find in the future.

(...actually this is all pointless desire on my part, I have a 2015 11")

So you would get the 2013 fully spec'd refurb rather than brand new 4gb 128gb with 3 year warranty?

I bought a refurb MBA for a family member last year. Looked just like new and there have been no problems. In the US, they have the same warranty as a new computer (1 year). Maybe that's different in the UK though?

Anyway, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a refurb again…. IF the price is right. Again, that isn't always so simple in the US. I could buy a new MBA from an out of state store here and not pay sales tax. Generally speaking, that makes them cheaper than an Apple refurb. When a business has a "physical presence" in a US State, the residents must pay sales tax. And Apple has stores in just about every state...

Absolutely! First, the 2013 fully spec'd is identical, chip for chip, to the 2014 fully spec'd model. Second, 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD is so much more important than having a slightly faster CPU.

Also, even the refurb prices are a tad high for those. You can get what I described, but without a warranty or with under 2 years remaining on the warranty, for $700-$800 on ebay easily. But buying refurb is certainly neater, easier, and with less headache.

Yes I love Apple refurbs, it's whether I should get the better spec on an older model.

Well, that's what I have and am still completely happy after three and a half years. Really, only you can answer this question though. Would 4gb/128gb meet your needs? Wouldn't interest me, but I use my MBA as a primary computer and run pro software like Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Vectorworks, Strata 3d cx, Vue Infinite, etc. And I have to do constant housekeeping to maintain a reasonable amount of free space on the 512 gb SSD.

As for used… personally I wouldn't buy a used laptop. I know that many peope do, but I just think there are too many possible problems - especially with a three year old computer. I know that mine has seen heavy use, and although there are no problems, it's three years closer to its grave. But I suppose it really comes down to the price of the computer vs. a refurb or new one. And your tolerance for risk. :)

Good thoughts. I'm of the same opinion regarding used notebooks. I don't see the upside... but then again, I can always find deals on new systems that I want that are LESS than Apple's refurb prices.

My wife has said on multiple occasions that I should go into the bargain hunter business and charge people 10% of the money they save by what I find.
